During an exhibition titled “One Hundred Years Since the Restoration of Njegoš’s Memorial Church on Lovćen,” the President of the Niksic Municipality, Marko Kovačević, emphasized the importance of revitalizing the chapel. He stated that the image of Njegoš is an integral part of Montenegro’s identity. Kovačević underscored that Montenegro is as close to itself as it is to Njegoš, raising the question of how one can honor Njegoš’s legacy without respecting his final wishes.

“Our vow, which was brought to life by the late Metropolitan Amfilohije and continued by Metropolitan Joanikije in this time, is to restore the chapel on Lovćen so that the roof of our homeland can also be renewed,” Kovačević announced. This restoration is seen as a means to reaffirm the commitment to Montenegro’s cultural heritage and spiritual legacy.

Metropolitan Joanikije Highlights Unity and Renewal

Opening the exhibition, Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral expressed that the unification of the Montenegrin people will parallel the restoration of the chapel. “As we celebrate this date, a glorious jubilee, we anticipate the renewal of the chapel on Lovćen to fulfill Njegoš’s testament. We are aware that much work lies ahead in restoring the chapel, and we will achieve the most through events like this—through culture and spirituality,” he stated.

The exhibition was held at the Palace of King Nikola and featured speeches from Vesna Todorović, the director of the Niksic Museums and Galleries, and exhibition author Dušan Babac. Their remarks highlighted the cultural significance of the event and the importance of preserving Montenegro’s history.

In attendance were numerous dignitaries, including Metropolitan Metodije from Budimlja-Nikšić, protojerej-stavrofor Slobodan Boban Jokić, and Milica Lalatović Žizic, the President of the Niksic Municipal Assembly. The gathering drew a considerable crowd of local citizens, marking a significant moment in Niksic’s cultural calendar.

Documentary Screening Celebrates Historical Ties

As part of the event, a documentary film was screened, titled “The Ceremonial Visit of King Alexander I Karađorđević and Queen Maria to Montenegro and Dalmatia in 1925.” This film underscored the historical connections between Montenegro and its royal figures, further enhancing the cultural experience of the evening.

The call for the restoration of the Lovćen chapel resonates deeply within the community, symbolizing not only a physical renewal but also a spiritual and cultural revival. As Niksic leaders rally around this initiative, it reflects a broader commitment to preserving Montenegro’s rich heritage for future generations.
