Premier League Fans Face Late Kick-Offs as Schedule Shifts
Premier League fans will experience a modified schedule this weekend, as the traditional Saturday 12:30 PM kick-off will not take place. Instead, supporters in the UK must wait until 17:30 to see action, with only four matches on the agenda for Saturday, November 4, 2023. The change has stirred disappointment among fans who are accustomed to enjoying lunchtime fixtures.
Arsenal’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, originally scheduled for the early slot, has been moved to 20:00. This adjustment comes after the Gunners’ recent Champions League victory against Club Brugge, where they secured a decisive 3-0 win. The Premier League deemed the turnaround too quick for Mikel Arteta’s squad, which has led to the rescheduling of their match.
In addition to Arsenal’s late kick-off, two matches will unfold at 15:00. Chelsea will host Everton at Stamford Bridge, while Liverpool welcomes Brighton & Hove Albion to Anfield. However, due to the longstanding 3 PM blackout rule in the UK, these matches will not be televised live, further limiting viewing options for fans.
The day culminates with Arsenal aiming to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League against Wolves, who are still searching for their first league win of the season. Meanwhile, Burnley will face Fulham at 17:30, as both teams grapple with relegation concerns. Burnley sits in the relegation zone and will be eager for a win, while Fulham is only four points above the drop.
Reasons Behind the Schedule Change
The decision to eliminate the early kick-off is not unprecedented. The Premier League has previously adjusted schedules for teams involved in European competitions. For instance, on November 1, 2023, Liverpool’s match against Aston Villa was also moved to a later time due to scheduling conflicts with rugby events in the city.
Supporters might find some solace in the fact that Arsenal fans, particularly, may appreciate the later start. Following an unsettling last-minute defeat to Aston Villa in their previous lunchtime match, some Gunners supporters might welcome the opportunity to regroup before facing Wolves.
Upcoming Premier League Fixtures
This weekend’s fixtures may be light on Saturday, but fans can look forward to a more robust line-up on Sunday. Five matches are scheduled, with four kicking off at 14:00 UK time. The highlight of the day is the eagerly awaited Wear-Tyne derby, where Sunderland will host Newcastle United for the first time since March 2016.
Other matches on Sunday include Nottingham Forest against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City visiting Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa facing West Ham United. Each of these matches features at least one team with European commitments, which has influenced the scheduling.
Interestingly, Brentford will play Leeds United at 16:30, although the reasoning behind this specific time slot remains unclear. The weekend will conclude with Manchester United taking on Bournemouth in a Monday night match at 20:00, which will also be available for live listening on talkSPORT.
As fans adapt to the revised schedule, the anticipation for the weekend’s Premier League action remains high, despite the changes.
