Remembering Jovaš Stanišić: A Voice for Montenegro’s Integrity
The renowned journalist and poet Jovaš Stanišić passed away on October 6, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that resonates deeply within the journalistic community and among those who knew him. His contributions to the newspaper Pobjeda were significant, yet his quiet demeanor often led to his achievements going unnoticed in the larger media landscape.
Stanišić was honored at his funeral in Vinici, where many gathered to pay their respects. Dragan Đurović, a prominent figure in journalism, delivered a heartfelt tribute, highlighting Stanišić’s unique ability to convey truth with grace. This gathering underscored the high regard in which Stanišić was held, demonstrating the impact he had on countless lives.
His approach to life and journalism was characterized by a rare humility. Stanišić was neither loud nor boastful; instead, he commanded respect through his words and actions. His strength lay not in physical presence but in his profound understanding of humanity.
Before embarking on his journalistic career, Stanišić served as a teacher in various locations, including Left Bank and Rovci. He graduated from the Pedagogical Academy in Niksic and quickly became known for his dedication to education and his commitment to instilling a sense of cultural pride in his students. His influence extended beyond the classroom, as he subtly encouraged his students to embrace their Montenegrin identity, even during politically challenging times.
Stanišić’s journalistic journey began at Pobjeda, where he frequently wrote about labor rights and union activities. He also served as an editor for a factory newsletter at Radoje Dakić, demonstrating his commitment to advocating for workers. His writing was marked by a clear stance on social issues, yet he expressed his opinions with a gentle yet firm voice.
During the Bosnian War, Stanišić played a crucial role in advocating for peace. As a reserve officer, he worked to dissuade soldiers from engaging in conflict, even bringing copies of the independent publication Monitor to them to promote a more peaceful discourse. His dedication to his fellow citizens was evident in his efforts to protect them from the horrors of war.
In the years leading up to his death, Stanišić became increasingly concerned about the political landscape in Montenegro. He was disheartened by attempts to undermine the country’s sovereignty and identity, feeling a profound connection to the land and its people. Despite his quiet demeanor, his love for Montenegro was unwavering, driven by a desire for a better future for his homeland.
Stanišić’s legacy is not just one of journalism but also of genuine compassion and commitment to social justice. He embodied the qualities of a true Montenegrin, balancing strength with humility. While he may not have shouted his love for Montenegro from the rooftops, he carried it in his heart and expressed it through his actions.
In a world where many voices go unheard, Jovaš Stanišić will be remembered as a steadfast advocate for his country and a mentor to many. His passing serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity in journalism and the power of quiet strength in the pursuit of truth.
