Rodrygo Celebrates Goal with Alonso, Emphasizing Team Unity
Real Madrid forward Rodrygo celebrated his first goal in 32 matches with a heartfelt hug for coach Xabi Alonso during the team’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on March 15, 2024. The gesture aimed to illustrate the team’s unity amid challenging circumstances, as the squad has struggled with form, securing only one win in their last five LaLiga matches.
Rodrygo acknowledged the pressure surrounding the club following a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Barcelona just days before. “We know there’s a lot of pressure here,” he stated. “It’s normal when things don’t go your way on the field. After my goal, I went to hug Xabi to show the team’s unity. I knew it was important to have that moment.”
The situation surrounding Alonso has become increasingly precarious. Club executives met earlier this week to discuss his future, highlighting the high expectations following his appointment to succeed Carlo Ancelotti. Six months into his tenure, Alonso’s position is now under scrutiny, especially with Madrid currently sitting four points adrift of league leaders ahead of their upcoming match against Alaves.
“It’s a difficult time,” Rodrygo reflected. “It is for us, and it is for him [Alonso], too. Things aren’t working out, and I wanted to show people that we are united with our coach. I know a lot of things are always said. They often try to create a lot of things, and I just wanted to say that we are united and that we need this unity to move forward and achieve our goal.”
Despite the loss, Rodrygo’s return to scoring form provides a glimmer of hope. He expressed understanding of the Bernabéu crowd’s frustrations, acknowledging that their whistling is a fair response to the team’s recent performances. “We know that Madrid is a very demanding club,” he said. “The fans are very demanding. We’ve been here for many years, and we know that’s what happens if we’re not doing well. We have to try to improve and try to get out of this situation.”
The forward emphasized the importance of resilience, stating, “I really needed the goal. I always try to score, always help, and the truth is, I wasn’t at my best. These things happen in football. I have to stay focused and keep training. That’s what I’ve been doing all this time, knowing things weren’t going my way.”
As Real Madrid prepares for their next challenge against Alaves, players and coaching staff alike will need to harness the spirit of unity demonstrated by Rodrygo to navigate through this testing period in the season.
