Investigation Into Met Police Misconduct Doubles in Two Years
An investigation is launched nearly every day into misconduct by officers and staff at the Metropolitan Police, according to recent statistics. The number of disciplinary cases has doubled over two years, with the force recording **301 hearings** from April 2024 to March 2025, up from **155** in the previous year. This surge comes as the police face intense scrutiny following the conviction of **Wayne Couzens**, who murdered **Sarah Everard** in 2021.
The Metropolitan Police, the largest police force in Britain with approximately **46,000** officers and staff, highlighted that “discreditable conduct” was the leading cause for disciplinary actions. In the past year alone, this resulted in **52 dismissals**, an increase from **33** the previous year. Notably, dismissals related to sexual misconduct have nearly doubled, with **28** officers terminated for such offenses compared to **17** two years ago.
Recent cases have included severe misconduct incidents. Officers were dismissed for a range of offenses, including sexual assault, domestic abuse, and arriving at work under the influence of cocaine. Among those dismissed was **PC Tony Watts**, who was removed from duty following a jury conviction for rape. Another case involved former officer **Aaron Goodman**, who was arrested after allegedly pointing a fake gun at his partner and possessing imitation weapons and police uniforms.
Andrea Simon, from the **End Violence Against Women Coalition**, expressed cautious optimism, stating, “It is positive that action is being taken to root out perpetrators.” This reflects a growing awareness and increased accountability within the police force.
The Metropolitan Police has emphasized its commitment to fostering a healthier workplace culture, where officers feel empowered to report misconduct. A recent statement from the force reiterated their dedication to “cultivating a healthier culture, in which colleagues feel empowered to call out bad behaviour.”
As investigations continue and more cases come to light, the Metropolitan Police faces a critical challenge in restoring public trust. The rise in disciplinary actions underscores the need for ongoing scrutiny and reform within the institution, particularly in the wake of high-profile incidents that have shaken public confidence.
