Mikel Merino Praises Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres Ahead of New Season

Arsenal’s summer signing, Viktor Gyokeres, has already impressed his new teammate Mikel Merino with his work ethic and attitude off the pitch. As the club prepares for the upcoming season, Merino predicts that Gyokeres will become a significant asset for Arsenal. This comes after a season where Arsenal faced criticism for not securing a dedicated centre-forward, continuing their five-year trophy drought.
At the beginning of the summer transfer window, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta emphasized the need for a genuine number nine. After a competitive chase, Gyokeres chose to join Arsenal over Manchester United, despite the latter’s interest from manager Ruben Amorim. The Swedish striker made a £64 million move to the Emirates Stadium, committing to the club until 2030.
Gyokeres gained notoriety in Portugal, scoring an impressive 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting during his two years in the Primeira Liga. While there are questions about his ability to replicate that form in the Premier League, Merino remains confident in his abilities.
Merino’s Confidence in Gyokeres
Merino discussed Gyokeres’ integration into the squad ahead of Arsenal’s opening match against Manchester United. He stated, “With every player in the squad, you have to adapt to the principles that the team have already.” He emphasized the striker’s strengths, saying, “Viktor, being such a good striker with his own tools, he’s going to be a massive player for us.”
He also highlighted the need for both the team and Gyokeres to adapt to one another’s qualities to build a successful partnership. Merino expressed optimism, stating, “I’m sure it’s going to be a good relationship there.”
The Spanish midfielder, who filled in as a false nine last season, described Gyokeres as “an amazing striker” who possesses strength, speed, and the ability to threaten opposing defenses. He added, “I’m more surprised about off-the-pitch stuff. He’s a professional guy, really humble, and he’s already adapting and ready to learn.”
Zubimendi’s Adaptation at Arsenal
Another significant addition to Arsenal’s squad is Martin Zubimendi, who joined from Real Sociedad for £60 million. Merino, who has played alongside Zubimendi at both club and international levels, noted his friend’s quick adaptation to his new environment.
“He’s an amazing player and he’s a good friend of mine as well so I hope for the best for him, always,” Merino remarked. He praised Zubimendi’s early contributions in matches and his commitment to learning English, saying, “the most important language he knows already is with the ball, communication with the teammates.”
Merino concluded that Zubimendi has already made a positive impact on the team, stating, “Everyone loves him around here so he has adapted really well and hopefully will play a huge role.” As the new season approaches, both Gyokeres and Zubimendi are poised to contribute significantly to Arsenal’s ambitions.
