Surrey Council Recycles 240 Bollards to Promote Sustainability
The Surrey County Council has taken a significant step toward sustainability by recycling approximately 240 road bollards. This initiative has successfully diverted the equivalent of 5–6 pallets of material from landfill, contributing to waste reduction and resource conservation.
Transforming Waste into Valuable Resources
Instead of discarding these old bollards, the council is repurposing them for reuse. This decision not only cuts down the demand for new raw materials but also provides old equipment with a new lease on life. The recycling process aligns with broader environmental goals, showcasing a proactive approach to waste management.
In partnership with Ecologi, Surrey has committed to planting one tree for each recycled bollard. As a result, 240 new trees have been planted globally, contributing to habitat restoration and carbon absorption. Over their lifetimes, these trees are expected to absorb around a third of a ton of CO2e, highlighting the dual benefits of this initiative for both local sustainability and global climate action.
Commitment to a Greener Future
This recycling effort exemplifies how small actions can collectively lead to substantial environmental change. The council emphasizes that innovative waste management practices not only reduce local environmental impact but also support international climate objectives. This initiative is part of Surrey County Council’s broader commitment to become a net-zero authority by 2030.
To achieve this ambitious target, the council is focusing on reducing emissions across its buildings, services, and supply chains. Projects like the recycling of road bollards illustrate practical steps that contribute to a greener future. By thinking creatively about waste, Surrey County Council demonstrates that sustainability can be integrated into everyday operations.
