Colombian Researchers Name Ancient Turtle Fossil After Shakira

Researchers in Colombia have unveiled an ancient turtle fossil, dating back approximately 13 million years, which they have named Shakiremys Columbiana in tribute to the globally recognized singer Shakira. The discovery was made by local farmers in La Victoria, located within the Tatacoa Desert, one of the largest palaeontological sites in the world.

This remarkable fossil, which includes both a skull and a shell, provides significant insights into the Miocene epoch, a period characterized by the presence of extensive lakes and rivers in the region. The findings were published recently in the journal Papers in Palaeontology.

According to Andres Felipe Vanegas, the director of the Tatacoa Natural History Museum, the analysis of the turtle’s shell revealed its adaptations to various water currents. A CT scan of the fossil also highlighted a “mosaic of unique characteristics,” indicating its distinct place within the turtle family.

The decision to name this new genus after Shakira stems not only from her international fame but also from her support for educational initiatives in Colombia through her Pies Descalzos Foundation. Vanegas noted, “We decided to call this turtle’s genus Shakiremys because, first, he’s a Shakira fan, and second, Shakira is a Colombian singer-songwriter with great international recognition who has also supported many educational causes.”

Shakira’s influence extends beyond music; with over 80 million records sold globally, she has played a pivotal role in popularizing Spanish-language music on the international stage.
