A speeding driver has been sentenced to 34 months in prison after a crash left his passengers seriously injured. The incident occurred on the night of August 9, 2024, in Minchinhampton, England, when Drew Philippidis, 25, boasted to pub-goers about the speed of his vehicle before recklessly driving away with four passengers.

Witnesses reported that Philippidis, while at a local pub, claimed he would demonstrate how fast his Seat Leon could go. Around 11:30 PM, he departed the pub with two 17-year-olds and a woman in her 20s. CCTV footage captured the vehicle as it sped away from the pub, with one witness noting that Philippidis nearly collided with her car.

Passengers inside the vehicle expressed their concerns, pleading with him to slow down. One passenger recounted, “We were all screaming frantically at the driver to slow down and stop the car, all of which he ignored.” Tragically, moments later, Philippidis lost control of the car, crashing into a wall at the junction of Butt Street and Cirencester Road.

Following the crash, Philippidis fled the scene, leaving his injured passengers behind. Emergency services quickly arrived, transporting the four to the hospital. Among the injuries, two passengers suffered significant spinal injuries. One victim required extensive surgery to stabilize their spine, while another spent a week in intensive care at Southmead Hospital after major spinal surgery.

The Gloucestershire Police initiated a search for Philippidis, employing a dog unit and a police helicopter. He was located the following morning and arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. During two interviews while in custody, Philippidis declined to comment on the events leading up to the crash.

He was released on bail and later charged in May 2024 with three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Philippidis ultimately pleaded guilty to all charges. At his sentencing on August 19, 2024, at Gloucester Crown Court, he received a 47-month driving ban in addition to his prison term. Upon completion of his sentence, he will be required to undergo an extended re-test before being allowed to drive again.

The case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating impact it can have on the lives of others.
