A new sleeper train service is set to launch in July 2023, providing convenient connections to several popular European city destinations across six nations. Operated by the Polish state rail company, PKP Intercity, the EN Carpatia service aims to enhance travel options for those looking to explore Europe by rail.

The route will begin in Przemyśl, a city in south-eastern Poland, departing at 17:51 local time. Travellers can expect a journey of approximately 16 and a half hours to the final destination of Munich, Germany. Along the way, the train will make stops in significant cities, including Kraków in Poland, before crossing into the Czech Republic.

Once in the Czech Republic, the train will split its carriages to serve different destinations. Some will head to Munich via Austria or the Czech capital of Prague, while others will continue on to Bratislava, Slovakia, and Budapest, Hungary. In Austria, the train will stop in major cities such as Vienna, Linz, and Salzburg.

PKP Intercity has designated this service as a EuroNight, requiring mandatory seat reservations. Passengers can choose between sleeper and couchette carriages, with a dining carriage anticipated, although not yet confirmed. The journey from Przemyśl to Bratislava is estimated to take around 12 hours, while travel to Budapest will take approximately 14 hours and 40 minutes.

Ticket prices for the new service have yet to be announced for journeys to and from Munich or Vienna. However, fares from Bratislava and Budapest to Przemyśl are already available. A non-refundable second-class ticket from Bratislava costs £22.17, while a ticket from Budapest is slightly higher at £27.14.

To ensure passengers’ comfort, PKP Intercity has implemented night-time quiet hours on its sleeper and couchette carriages. A staff member will also wake travellers at an agreed time, no later than 30 minutes before arriving at their destination station.

This launch follows the introduction of a seasonal sleeper train service from Warsaw to Rijeka, Croatia, along the picturesque Adriatic coast, in summer 2023. The EN Carpatia service represents a significant addition to Europe’s rail travel options, making it easier for tourists and locals alike to discover the continent’s vibrant cities and cultures.
