Ukraine entered 2026 under dire circumstances, as Russian forces launched an aggressive drone assault involving 205 drones on New Year’s Eve. This attack resulted in the deaths of at least two civilians and injuries to at least 16 others across various regions of the country, according to local authorities.

The Ukrainian air defense system intercepted 176 drones, but a significant number, at least 24 drones, successfully penetrated the defenses, striking 15 locations. The impact of these strikes was felt particularly in Kherson Oblast, where one individual was killed and four others sustained injuries, as reported by Governor Oleksandr Prokudin. In the eastern Donetsk Oblast, Governor Vadym Filashkin confirmed another civilian fatality.

In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, which is predominantly under Russian control, local authorities reported that nine people were injured due to the drone attacks. Over the past 24 hours, Russian forces executed 612 strikes across 24 settlements within this region. The situation was similarly dire in Kharkiv Oblast, where airstrikes resulted in injuries to two civilians, including a 76-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov. Civilian infrastructure, including homes and power lines, suffered significant damage in five districts.

In a separate incident in Sumy Oblast, a 25-year-old man was injured as Russian forces targeted 37 settlements with 75 attacks within the same time frame. The strikes also hit critical infrastructure in Odesa and Volyn Oblasts, with notable damage to energy facilities. Fires erupted from several attacks, leaving many residents without power, according to the Energy Ministry.

The United Nations reported a staggering total of 53,006 civilian casualties, including 14,534 deaths, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The UN Monitoring Mission in Ukraine highlighted that the first ten months of 2025 alone accounted for 12,062 casualties, surpassing the total for all of 2024, which was 9,112.

In a related context, Ukrainian forces have been actively targeting Russian oil refineries, a strategy purportedly supported by covert training from the CIA. Throughout 2025, these strikes intensified, causing fuel shortages and inflated prices within Russia, which were estimated to cost the Russian economy up to £55 million per day, according to a US intelligence estimate.

These developments underscore the ongoing human and economic toll of the conflict, as both sides continue to engage in a protracted struggle with significant implications for the region and beyond.
