Argentina’s Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein Resigns Ahead of Elections

Argentina’s Foreign Minister, Gerardo Werthein, has resigned from his position, according to an announcement from the presidential office on March 6, 2024. This marks the second departure of a foreign minister during President Javier Milei’s administration. While the government has not provided an official reason for Werthein’s resignation or named a successor, local media reports indicate that he had initially intended to step down following the upcoming legislative elections on March 10, 2024.
Werthein’s resignation comes just days before a crucial legislative vote that could significantly impact the political landscape in Argentina. Having served nearly a year in the role, Werthein succeeded Diana Mondino, who was dismissed for supporting a resolution at the United Nations that called for the lifting of the U.S. embargo on Cuba. His sudden exit raises questions about the stability of Milei’s cabinet as the government faces growing public dissent over stringent spending cuts affecting vulnerable citizens and a recent corruption scandal.
President Milei has hinted at a possible cabinet reshuffle following the midterm elections, further complicating the political atmosphere. The resignation is particularly concerning as Milei’s libertarian party aims to increase its minority representation in Congress to bolster his ambitious austerity measures and economic reforms.
The Argentine government is also under increasing international scrutiny. Washington has indicated that continued financial support hinges on the outcome of the elections. Recently, the U.S. Treasury agreed to a $20 billion currency swap with Argentina and is reportedly preparing an additional $20 billion facility for banks and investors. This financial backing is critical as Argentina navigates its economic recovery efforts while trying to maintain political stability, both domestically and internationally.
Werthein’s departure adds to the uncertainty surrounding President Milei’s administration. As the government grapples with public unrest and economic challenges, the stakes for the upcoming elections have never been higher. The outcome will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Argentina’s political and economic landscape.
