M4 Bridge Team Transforms Scout Hut in One-Day Community Effort

A team involved in the reconstruction of a motorway bridge paused their usual work to undertake a significant transformation of a local Scout hut in a remarkable one-day initiative. On September 25, staff from the M4 Badminton Road bridge project, led by National Highways and principal contractors Taylor Woodrow, collaborated with partners from WSP, Freyssinet, and Carney Construction to revamp the base of the Cotswold Edge Scout District in Coalpit Heath, South Gloucestershire.
The project originated from a request by the Scout group for recycled materials from the nearby construction site. During a visit to assess potential community benefits, project leaders identified numerous necessary improvements for the well-utilized Scout hut. Volunteers dedicated their day to delivering a variety of upgrades that significantly enhanced the facility.
Significant Upgrades and Community Impact
The volunteers undertook a range of tasks including painting, landscaping, and installing new equipment. They were supported by GAP, which provided plant and machinery free of charge to assist in the effort. Dean Ashpole-Chapman, District Centre Lead Volunteer, expressed his gratitude, stating, “We’re so grateful to the whole team. The fantastic volume of work achieved in just one day would have easily taken us over two years to complete.”
This initiative is part of a broader commitment by National Highways to support local communities through its social value programme. Earlier in the year, safety enhancements, including an access ramp and railings, were installed at the site. Steve Pearson, National Highways’ Supplier Relationship Manager for the South West, emphasized the importance of their social responsibility. “Our Social Value ethos is a fantastic way in which we can complement our schemes and help local communities alongside our road network,” he stated.
He added, “While our focus is to deliver a high-quality, safe road network, we’re passionate about making a positive impact on our local areas and communities, and we’re delighted to have been able to benefit the Scout group with this work.”
Future Developments on the M4 Project
The M4 bridge, which was demolished in late 2022 due to structural concerns, is currently under full replacement. New bridge beams are expected to be installed during a motorway closure from October 24 to October 27, with the completed 46.5-metre-long structure slated to open to the public in early 2026.
The collaborative effort on the Scout hut showcases the potential of community partnerships and the positive impact of corporate social responsibility initiatives. Owen Martin, Social Value Lead at Taylor Woodrow, remarked on the rewarding nature of the event, noting, “It was a truly collaborative effort. We had a mix of expertise and buy-in, and it was so rewarding to see the impact of the volunteering event, which has delivered a more accessible, enhanced and clean and fresh facility.”
This day of service not only revitalized the Scout hut but also reinforced the commitment of these organizations to contribute positively to the communities they serve.
