Moray Council libraries have introduced two significant research tools that enhance access to historical information for all library members. The new resources include the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, enabling users to delve into extensive collections of historical newspaper articles and genealogical records.

Enhanced Access to Historical Records

With the inclusion of the British Newspaper Archive, library users can now explore millions of newspaper articles from various periods and regions. Accessing this resource is straightforward for local library members, who can conduct free searches using their library membership cards. This initiative allows the community to engage with history in a meaningful way, providing valuable insights into past events.

In addition to newspaper archives, the Ancestry Library Edition is now available in all Moray libraries. This tool supports individuals in tracing their family history through a comprehensive collection of UK records, including births, deaths, marriages, military service, and census records. The ability to access parish records and immigration/emigration details further enriches the genealogical research experience.

Convenient Access Options for Users

Library PCs are available for free use, although booking in advance is highly recommended to ensure availability. For those who prefer to use personal devices, public Wi-Fi is accessible in the libraries, allowing users to connect and explore these resources from anywhere within the library premises.

Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about the new digital offerings. She stated, “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community. Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”

The addition of these research tools marks a significant step forward for Moray Council libraries, aiming to enrich the community’s access to information and support personal and educational research. With the ability to investigate historical events and familial connections, library members now have enhanced resources to aid in their scholarly pursuits.
