UK Strengthens Ties with India Amid Security Concerns

The UK has reaffirmed its commitment to India following a recent terrorist attack in Delhi, as Foreign Office Minister Seema Malhotra led discussions on the progress of UK–India relations. Speaking at an event on July 12, 2023, at Lancaster House, Malhotra offered condolences to the families affected by the attack and highlighted the shared values and commitment to security that underpin the partnership between the two nations.

This gathering marked a year of significant developments in UK–India relations, which included two visits by prime ministers and the establishment of the UK–India Vision 2035 and a comprehensive free trade agreement. Malhotra emphasized the UK’s outward-facing approach under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, stating, “We have become a nation that stands tall on the international stage, promoting prosperity and security.”

The minister pointed out the importance of rebuilding trust with other nations, illustrating how this has led to a reset of relationships with the European Union and a successful trade deal with the United States. The recent collaboration with India, marked by the signing of the UK–India Vision 2035, represents a major leap forward in economic partnership.

Building a Stronger Economic Partnership

Malhotra described India as a “close friend” and a “strategic partner,” emphasizing the deep roots and promising future of the relationship. She referred to the partnership as a “unique living bridge” built on mutual respect and the contributions of Indian communities in the UK.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, who is also the Secretary of State for Justice, echoed Malhotra’s sentiments during the event attended by senior diplomats and business leaders. He described India as “one of the UK’s most important partners,” recalling his own visits to India as Foreign Secretary where he engaged in discussions on the “shared history and shared future” of both countries.

Lammy highlighted India’s emergence as a superpower in the 21st century, noting its rapid economic growth within the G20 and its trajectory to become the world’s third-largest economy by the end of the decade. “Scratch the surface, and you find much that unites us: two vibrant democracies… two nations determined to build the past and shape a better future,” he said.

The recent trade agreement is expected to deepen historic ties, with Lammy citing early gains from the deal, including an investment of £1.3 billion into the UK and £3.6 billion into India, resulting in the creation of approximately 10,600 jobs. He called the agreement a “clear win-win” and expressed gratitude to the Indian government for their warm reception of the UK delegation.

Future Collaborations and Cultural Connections

Trade between the UK and India currently surpasses £40 billion, with both nations collaborating on critical technologies through the Technology Security Initiative. Lammy emphasized that this partnership also extends to tackling climate change, which he termed the most serious threat of the current century.

In addition to economic discussions, Lammy mentioned recent judicial cooperation initiatives, including a visit from Sir Geoffrey Vos to Delhi for talks on the Standing International Forum of Commercial Courts. This engagement is expected to enhance future collaboration under an existing memorandum of understanding.

The event brought together a diverse array of guests, including Vikram Doraiswami, the Indian High Commissioner, and notable peers such as Lord Karan Bilimoria and Lord Jitesh Gadhia.
