Nationwide Building Society reported a significant surge in customer transactions on Black Friday, with more than 2.5 million transactions recorded between midnight and 10:00 AM. This figure represents a remarkable 13.6% increase compared to the same time last year, when the society logged over 2.2 million transactions by 10:00 AM on the same day in 2024.

Predictions and Customer Trends

Mark Nalder, the Service, Operations, and Performance Director at Nationwide, indicated that the society had anticipated a total of over 12 million transactions throughout the day, reflecting a 10% growth from 2024. Nalder noted, “So far this morning, our customers have made over 2.5 million transactions, which means we’re already seeing a busy day ahead for retailers.”

This year’s shopping event has highlighted increased consumer vigilance regarding potential scams and unrealistic deals. Nalder encouraged shoppers to prioritize safety by opting for reputable retailers and brands they trust. He emphasized the importance of checking price histories to ensure they are making informed purchases and suggested reading verified customer reviews to avoid disappointment.

Advice for Shoppers

As shoppers navigate the plethora of deals on Black Friday, Nalder provided practical advice to help them manage their spending. “Try and stick to a budget or the wishlist of items you had in mind to avoid impulse purchases or overspending,” he stated. This guidance comes at a time when many consumers are eager to take advantage of sales but are also more cautious than ever.

The increase in transactions at Nationwide aligns with broader consumer trends observed during major shopping events. As retailers strive to attract customers with enticing offers, the importance of prudent shopping practices remains paramount.

Overall, the early data points to a bustling Black Friday, with consumers keen to make the most of the sales while staying aware of potential pitfalls.
