A young athlete from Bala has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the DEKA Mile world championship in Florida. Gwion Ellis, just 21 years old, showcased his exceptional talent in hybrid fitness racing at the DEKA World Championships held from December 5 to 7, 2023, in Fort Lauderdale. Despite not yet transitioning to professional boxing, Ellis has made his mark in a highly competitive field.

Ellis faced tough competition in two key events: DEKA Fit and DEKA Mile, both designed to challenge overall strength, endurance, and agility. He began the championships with the DEKA Fit event but finished a disappointing fourth. However, he quickly regained his focus and determination for the DEKA Mile the following day, which ultimately led to his crowning as the champion.

The primary distinction between the two events lies in their running segments. DEKA Fit requires competitors to complete a 500-meter run before each exercise zone, while DEKA Mile involves a shorter 160-meter run. This change in structure suited Ellis, who had undergone rigorous training in preparation for the championships.

Ellis expressed his initial disappointment after the DEKA Fit event, stating, “I went out too quickly in the DEKA Fit and burned myself out.” The heat in Fort Lauderdale also posed a challenge, as he struggled with excessive sweating. After a reflective evening, he sought to recalibrate his approach for the following day.

His brother, Gethin Ellis, a fitness trainer, supported him throughout the competition. With guidance from Gethin Ellis Coaching, Ellis adjusted his tactics for the DEKA Mile. He embraced a more confident mindset and felt invigorated as he approached the final stations. “I turned the screw and gave it everything I had and thankfully I came away with the title,” he noted with pride.

Ellis discovered his passion for running while attending Ysgol Godre’r Berwyn, but boxing has always been his primary focus. He aims to turn professional in the coming year, balancing his boxing training with DEKA preparation. His training regimen includes sparring, gym sessions, and extensive running sessions around Bala, which have been crucial in competing against top-tier athletes.

Earlier this year, Ellis also showcased his endurance by winning the 32-mile Sea 2 Summit Offa’s Dyke Ultra Marathon, completing the course in an impressive 6 hours, 31 minutes, and 25 seconds. This performance brought him close to the course record of 6:09:47 set by Lee Mahon in 2021. The ultra marathon began at the Prestatyn seafront, leading competitors along the Offa’s Dyke trail, culminating in a challenging ascent with over 2,000 meters of elevation gain.

Ellis’s journey in the world of fitness racing and boxing continues to garner attention. He shares updates of his athletic pursuits on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok under the handle @GwionEllis. His recent triumph at the DEKA Mile highlights his dedication and potential as a rising star in both boxing and hybrid fitness racing.
