Putin Cancels Navy Parade in St. Petersburg Amid Drone Threats

Vladimir Putin abruptly cancelled the annual Navy Day parade in St. Petersburg due to heightened security concerns following significant Ukrainian drone attacks. Originally scheduled for Sunday, the event was scaled back after Russian air defences intercepted over 90 drones overnight, marking a challenging day for the Kremlin.
The parade, a highlight of Russia’s naval celebrations, was to feature a display of warships. Instead, Putin was left navigating the harbour in a small Raptor vessel before ultimately departing the scene. The festivities had also been planned for the Kaliningrad region on the Baltic and in the far-eastern port of Vladivostok.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the cancellation was “linked to the overall situation,” emphasizing that security was the top priority. This decision reflects ongoing tensions as NATO countries in the Baltic region have increased military spending, prompting Russia to assert its nuclear capabilities.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that air defences shot down a total of 99 Ukrainian drones across various regions overnight. On the same day, an additional 51 drones were intercepted near St. Petersburg. Tragically, local authorities confirmed that a man was killed and three others injured by falling drone fragments. The threat led to the suspension of dozens of flights at Pulkovo airport early on Sunday.
During his visit to St. Petersburg, Putin toured the historic admiralty building and received updates on the July Storm exercise, which involved 150 warships spanning from the Baltics to the Pacific. He pledged to enhance the navy’s capabilities, stating that “the navy’s strike power and combat capability will rise to a qualitatively new level.”
His visit also included a stop at the Admiral Grigorovich frigate, where he commended the crew for their successful defence against a Ukrainian drone attack earlier in the day. The decision to reduce the scale of the Navy Day celebrations underscores Moscow’s anxiety over Ukraine’s extensive drone operations.
Since the conflict began, Ukraine has successfully targeted Russian naval assets, including the sinking of several warships in the Black Sea. This has significantly hampered Moscow’s naval operations, forcing a strategic redeployment of its fleet from occupied Crimea to Novorossiysk.
In a notable incident earlier in June, Ukraine launched a drone strike dubbed “Spiderweb,” targeting Russian air bases that housed long-range bombers from the Arctic Kola Peninsula to Siberia. The operation involved drones launched from hidden trucks near the bases, delivering a surprising blow to Russian military capabilities and providing a morale boost for Ukraine at a critical time in the ongoing conflict.
On the same day as the naval celebrations were curtailed, Russia continued its aerial assaults on Ukraine. In the northeastern city of Sumy, drone attacks caused damage to civil infrastructure, injuring three individuals. Additionally, two men lost their lives due to land mine explosions, while another woman sustained injuries from a separate drone attack in the region.
As the situation continues to evolve, the implications of these military engagements remain significant for both nations, influencing the broader dynamics of the ongoing conflict.
