Explore Genomics’ Impact on Sheep Farming at EasyCare Open Evening

The potential of genomics in sheep farming will be showcased at an upcoming event hosted by Campbell Tweed on his Ballycoose Farm in Cairncastle on July 30, 2024. This open evening aims to inform farmers about how genomic advancements can enhance performance across the sheep sector. Attendees will have the opportunity to see some of the most progressive EasyCare bloodlines available in the UK and Ireland.
Understanding the Role of Genomics in Sheep Breeding
During the event, a representative from Signet will discuss how genomics is transforming sheep breeding. The representative explained that the industry is transitioning from traditional genetic predictions based solely on pedigree and performance data to those that integrate detailed genomic information. This includes variations in an animal’s DNA and the individual genes it possesses.
“Genomic information has a variety of potential uses, including sire and dam verification, which is crucial for pedigree societies,” the representative noted. “It is also beneficial for flocks moving away from single sire mating, allowing for parent identification through DNA testing, a practice common in hill breeding programs.”
Furthermore, genomic evaluations can identify significant genes related to desirable traits such as Scrapie resistance, muscle growth linked to myostatin, and key fertility genes. The representative added that genomic data significantly enhances understanding of traits expressed in specific sexes, traits that manifest later in life, and those that are costly to measure, such as methane production and meat quality.
Signet’s current genomic evaluation systems are linked to seven hill breeds and three terminal sire breeds, laying the foundation for future advancements. “We are collaborating with various research projects, levy funders, and individual breeders to compile genomic data, aiming to establish genomic breeding values for several large maternal breeds in the coming years,” the representative stated.
Efforts have also expanded to Northern Ireland, where Signet is partnering with AgriSearch to enhance their growing bank of genotypes. The representative emphasized that genomic assessment holds the potential for meaningful change in the sheep sector, but achieving this requires collaboration among individual farmers and all stakeholders involved.
Event Details and Benefits of EasyCare Sheep
The EasyCare open evening will commence at 18:00 local time. Campbell Tweed’s flock at Ballycoose Farm has been dedicated to performance recording all sheep born on the farm for many years through both the Signet and Sheep Ireland programmes. This commitment has been central to the flock’s ongoing success.
“Visitors will have the chance to view a selection of ewes, lambs, and rams currently available within the flock,” Campbell stated. He noted that EasyCare sheep are renowned for their wool-shedding qualities, but the program aims to breed ewes that excel in grass utilization, animal health, and outdoor lambing with minimal human intervention. “The results from our flock recording programmes have enabled us to achieve these goals,” he added.
Interest in EasyCare sheep continues to rise across the island of Ireland. Campbell highlighted that this trend reflects a growing recognition among flock owners of the sheep’s ability to optimize their time while maintaining high performance levels. Members of the EasyCare Sheep Ireland Group will also attend the open evening to provide further insights.
Campbell and his wife Isobel operate their farm near the village of Carncastle in East County Antrim. Refreshments will be served at the event, with Campbell acknowledging Dunbia for their support. “EasyCare sheep play a vital role on various types of sheep farms, particularly for owners who work traditional hours from 09:00 to 17:00, as they can largely manage themselves,” he noted.
Currently, Campbell is accepting orders for breeding EasyCare ewes, lambs, and rams, emphasizing the value of fully recorded stock in enhancing any sheep operation. He remarked on the increasing demand for EasyCare bloodlines, describing this trend as encouraging for the future of sheep farming.
