The summer carnival season in Kent is in full swing, captivating communities with vibrant parades and festive events. As families and friends gather to celebrate, multiple towns across the county are hosting their own unique carnival festivities, showcasing a range of activities from parades to firework displays. Here’s a guide to the exciting events planned for the upcoming weeks.
Deal Carnival: A Week-Long Celebration
In Deal, the carnival celebrations extend beyond a single day. The organizing team has planned a week filled with activities, culminating in a grand parade. This year’s festivities include fireworks displays, beach parties, and raft races. The parade will start at 18:00 on July 31 at The Strand in Walmer, making its way to Sandown. Expect to see marching bands, street dancers, and a variety of colorful floats.
Dover Carnival: Expanding Horizons
Dover’s carnival promises to be bigger than ever, featuring a new, longer route. It will commence from the Maison Dieu car park at 16:00 on August 10 and will loop through the town. Local teenager Hannah Caldwell will lead the carnival court as this season’s Miss Dover Town. The parade will showcase local schools, youth clubs, costumed characters, classic cars, cheerleaders, and traditional floats, making it a vibrant community celebration.
Faversham Carnival: A Warm Autumn Finale
Crowds in Faversham will need to bundle up for the season’s final carnival, scheduled for 18:30 on October 11. This autumnal celebration will transform the historic town into a dazzling after-dark street party featuring illuminated floats, music, dancers, and gymnasts. A funfair will also take place in the nearby Recreation Ground, promising an enjoyable evening for all.
Herne Bay: A Coastal Extravaganza
Herne Bay invites visitors to enjoy a full day of festivities on August 9, starting at 18:00. The carnival will include a street art competition, a “Kids Got Talent” show, and live music at the Clocktower Plaza. A spectacular fireworks display will cap off the day’s events, and the parade will feature majestic carnival courts and children’s entertainment, ensuring a lively atmosphere by the coast.
Margate: A Taste of Rio
Margate’s carnival is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere that mirrors the energy of Rio de Janeiro, especially on sunny days. The parade on August 3 at 14:30 at Palm Bay will showcase extravagant costumes, samba dancers, steel bands, and street performers, making it a feast for the senses that locals and visitors alike eagerly anticipate.
Sheerness: Seaside Festival Week
The Sheerness carnival is part of the broader Seaside Festival Week, featuring a diverse lineup of family-friendly activities. Scheduled for August 16 at 16:00 from New Road, this year’s procession will include decorated bikes, vintage vehicles, cosplayers, and local youth groups. The lively atmosphere promises to engage participants of all ages.
Sittingbourne: A Musical Theme
Sittingbourne Carnival has chosen the popular musical “Wicked” as its theme for this year’s event. Taking place on August 24 at 13:00 at Milton Recreation Ground, attendees can expect to see elaborately designed floats inspired by the story, alongside participants dressed as characters from the show. It is a wonderful opportunity for community members to showcase their creativity and enjoy the magic of theater.
Whitstable: Honoring a Local Icon
This year’s Whitstable carnival, scheduled for August 2 at 17:30 on Tankerton Road, pays tribute to actor Peter Cushing, a former resident of the town. The event will feature children’s artwork depicting the film legend and movie-themed floats, celebrating the town’s rich cultural heritage.
As the summer unfolds, these carnivals in Kent offer an opportunity for communities to come together, celebrate local talent, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that defines the season. With a variety of events planned, there is something for everyone to enjoy across the county.
