Shaolin Abbot Investigated for Embezzlement and Misconduct

The abbot of the renowned Shaolin Temple in China, Shi Yongxin, is currently under investigation for alleged embezzlement and engaging in improper relationships with women. The temple’s management disclosed this information on October 15, 2023, detailing that Shi is being scrutinized for the misuse of temple assets and has reportedly fathered at least one child, a violation of the celibacy vow expected of Buddhist monks.
The temple’s statement indicated that Shi Yongxin, 59, is facing a joint investigation by multiple governmental departments. It emphasized, “Further information will be released to the public in due course.” Following the announcement, the Buddhist Association of China confirmed that Shi has been stripped of his ordination certificate, which serves as official proof of a monk’s qualification to live a monastic life. The association criticized his actions, stating they “severely tarnish the reputation of the Buddhist community and damage the image of monastics.”
Shi has been the abbot of the Shaolin Temple since 1999 and served as a member of the Chinese parliament for two decades. He is often referred to as the “CEO monk” due to his business acumen, which has transformed the Shaolin Temple into a commercial empire. His ventures have included generating significant revenue through tourism and merchandise, but this has led to concerns among followers about the potential corruption of the temple’s spiritual integrity.
The abbot gained international attention for meeting prominent figures, including Queen Elizabeth II and Apple CEO Tim Cook. In a controversial move in 2006, Shi accepted a luxury vehicle worth 1 million yuan (approximately $140,000) from the local government as a reward for promoting tourism. At that time, he defended the acceptance by stating, “Monks are also citizens. We have fulfilled our duties and made contributions to society, so it is only right that we receive rewards.”
This investigation into Shi Yongxin’s conduct comes as another high-profile monk in Thailand faces similar scrutiny. Reports indicate that a senior monk is under police investigation for allegedly embezzling hundreds of millions of baht in temple donations and is implicated in an inappropriate romantic affair. Major General Jaroonkiat Pankaew, deputy commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, confirmed that the inquiry stems from long-standing complaints lodged with the Religious Affairs Centre.
These unfolding events have raised significant concerns about the ethical standards and accountability within the monastic community, prompting calls for stricter regulations to uphold the integrity of religious institutions. The Shaolin Temple and its leadership will likely face intense scrutiny as this investigation progresses.
