A postmaster in Epworth, Richard Haley, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his outstanding contributions to the local community. The honour was part of the New Year’s Honours List and was presented on behalf of King Charles by Professor Dame Hilary Chapman DBE at a ceremony held at Doncaster Mansion House. Haley was accompanied by his wife, Steph, and Jo Fryatt, the Post Office Area Manager.

Richard Haley has dedicated over 32 years to the Post Office, serving as the postmaster at Doncaster’s Beckett Road Post Office from 1993 to 2008 before taking charge of the Epworth Post Office in 2012. The British Empire Medal, established in 1922, recognises individuals who provide hands-on service to their communities, allowing recipients to use the post-nominal letters BEM.

Haley’s journey with Epworth Post Office began when he managed the branch from 2008 to 2012. When the opportunity arose to purchase the branch, he seized it, solidifying his commitment to the village. He has since been described as the heart of Epworth, earning the affection of both residents and his team.

Community Commitment and Recognition

Haley’s dedication to his role extends beyond typical duties. He has been known to travel more than 25 miles to collect urgent deliveries for customers, demonstrating his commitment to ensuring their needs are met. His approach has been acknowledged by Jo Fryatt, who stated, “I am delighted that Richard has received this New Year’s Honour for all that he does for his village and his outreach communities. It was a privilege to attend his award ceremony.”

Haley believes that being a postmaster is more than just a job; it is a vocation. He expressed his passion for the role, saying, “I can’t imagine doing any other role as I enjoy doing it so much.” His rapport with customers is a testament to his commitment. He makes an effort to learn their names, ensuring they feel valued and appreciated during their visits.

According to the Post Office, Richard Haley’s approach to customer service sets a standard within his team. Fryatt noted, “Richard gives them that extra care during the customer service. He emphasises to his team about the importance of being customer focused.” His recognition with the BEM highlights not just personal achievement but also the impact one individual can have on a community.

Haley’s award ceremony attracted attention, marking a significant moment not just for him, but for the village of Epworth. The British Empire Medal serves as a reminder of the importance of community service and the dedication of individuals like Richard Haley, who strive to enhance the lives of those around them.
