Iconic 80s Opal Fruits Return to Shelves for Just 31p

For the first time in over 27 years, the iconic sweet known as Opal Fruits has made a comeback, appearing on supermarket shelves across the UK. Priced at just 31p, this nostalgic treat has sparked excitement among fans of the classic 1980s confectionery.
Originally launched in 1959, Opal Fruits were a beloved choice for many, featuring a variety of flavours such as blackcurrant, lemon and lime, orange, and strawberry. The sweets, manufactured by The Wrigley Company, were rebranded as Starburst in 1998, leading to their discontinuation in their original form. Now, they are available once again, albeit as a special edition.
Return to Retail
The return of Opal Fruits was first reported by an observant shopper on social media, who spotted the sweets at a Tesco store. This unexpected find has led to a flurry of comments from nostalgic customers eager to relive their childhood. One enthusiastic shopper noted, “Bargain find in Tesco’s, 31p, reduced to clear, not sure all of them are at the price.”
Another customer expressed their delight by stating that these sweets are “made to make your mouth water.” The excitement around Opal Fruits mirrors the recent trend of retailers bringing back classic sweets, as seen with Aldi, which recently launched Fruit Chewy Candy bars for 95p. These bars, reminiscent of childhood treats, come in flavours such as raspberry, cherry, and grapefruit, further tapping into the nostalgic market.
Nostalgia in Retail
The resurgence of retro sweets highlights a growing consumer trend where nostalgia plays a significant role in purchasing decisions. Customers have taken to social media to express their joy over the return of these classic treats. One fan remarked, “Oh my god, I haven’t eaten them since I was a child! They are amazing!” Another chimed in, “Please, if you ever see these, I will give you the money for ten packets; I haven’t seen these since I was a child.”
As retailers continue to capitalize on nostalgia, the return of Opal Fruits stands as a testament to the enduring popularity of sweets that evoke fond memories. With the combination of affordability and nostalgia, these classic treats are likely to enjoy a warm reception among both long-time fans and a new generation of consumers.
