Trump Envoy Advances US Critical Minerals Strategy in Uzbekistan
The United States is intensifying its diplomatic efforts in Uzbekistan as Paolo Zampolli, the White House’s Special Envoy for Global Partnerships, embarks on a significant visit aimed at promoting the U.S. critical minerals agenda. Zampolli arrived in Tashkent on August 28, 2025, with a focus on establishing enduring ties to bolster U.S. diplomatic relations in the region.
The Trump administration has prioritized enhancing trade and ensuring access to Uzbekistan’s rich deposits of critical minerals. This emphasis comes as part of a broader strategy to engage with Central Asia. In a recent meeting with local media, Jonathan Henick, the U.S. envoy in Tashkent, highlighted the “unprecedented level” of cooperation between the two nations at the start of 2025.
Upon his arrival, Zampolli met with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The discussions centered on expanding the strategic partnership between the two countries. According to a statement from the Uzbek president’s office, the meeting covered various areas of collaboration, including mineral resources, aviation, digital technologies, and innovation. The dialogue aims to foster a constructive political atmosphere.
Public Diplomacy and Cultural Engagement
Zampolli’s itinerary in Uzbekistan includes participation in several public diplomacy events designed to enhance the U.S. image. Notably, he will join President Mirziyoyev in celebrating Uzbek Independence Day, engage with players from the Uzbek national soccer team participating in the upcoming World Cup in the United States, and attend the opening of American Corner Tashkent. This venue is dedicated to promoting American values and fostering cultural exchange.
Zampolli, known for his long-standing business relationship with former President Donald Trump, previously served as the ambassador of the Caribbean island nation of Dominica to the United Nations. His current mission underscores the U.S. commitment to strengthening relationships in Central Asia while emphasizing the importance of critical minerals for future economic partnerships.
As Uzbekistan continues to develop its mineral resources, the collaboration with the United States could lead to significant advancements in various sectors, enhancing both nations’ economic prospects. The ongoing dialogue between U.S. officials and Uzbek leadership reflects a mutual interest in forging a reliable strategic partnership that benefits both parties.
