Challenge Your Mind with Gerrymandering Logic Puzzles

Today, puzzle enthusiasts are invited to engage with three unique gerrymandering logic puzzles designed by Brady Forrest, also known as Deckard. Each puzzle challenges players to create an electoral map where the minority color secures the majority of regions. This exercise melds logic and strategy, appealing to those interested in mathematics and competitive gaming.
The puzzles require players to identify regions, which are defined as contiguous blocks of cells connected either horizontally or vertically. A region cannot include cells that are connected diagonally. The goal is for the minority color to win the majority of defined areas, making for an engaging challenge.
Exploring the Puzzles
The first puzzle is categorized as easy. Participants must divide a grid into five regions, each containing five cells, ensuring that the minority color, purple, claims the majority of regions.
The second puzzle presents a medium difficulty level. In this challenge, the grid consists of five regions of ten cells each. Here, the minority color must again emerge victorious, with the added condition that no ties are permitted in any region.
The third puzzle is the hardest of the trio. Players must divide a grid into seven regions of seven cells each, with blue as the minority color. As with the previous puzzles, ties are not allowed for first place in any region, increasing the complexity.
For those seeking to solve these puzzles on paper, a printable version is available, alongside additional bonus puzzles. Alternatively, interactive versions can be accessed online via links provided beneath each puzzle.
Further Insights and Resources
Brady Forrest discusses the mathematical principles behind these puzzles in a YouTube clip, offering viewers insights into the solving process. The solutions to the puzzles are provided at the end of the article for those who wish to verify their answers.
In addition to the puzzles, Forrest has been creating weekly challenges since 2015, aiming to foster a community of puzzle lovers. He continues to seek new and exciting puzzles, inviting suggestions via email.
On a related note, a fact from Forrest’s latest book, Football School Facts, highlights that Gerry Taggart, a former player for Bolton, is one of only four Premier League players who have received red cards on their birthdays. This intriguing tidbit and many others are featured in the book, which is a full-color, hardback edition suitable for readers aged 7 to 107. It is available for purchase at the Guardian Bookshop.
These gerrymandering puzzles not only provide an entertaining challenge but also serve as a reminder of the strategic considerations inherent in electoral processes.
