Emma Heming Willis Shares Painful Details of Bruce’s Dementia Diagnosis

Emma Heming Willis has opened up about the deeply emotional experience surrounding her husband, Bruce Willis’s, dementia diagnosis. The family revealed in early 2023 that the acclaimed actor has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a rare form of dementia that affects approximately one in 20 individuals with dementia. This announcement came just a year after Willis stepped away from acting due to aphasia, a condition affecting his ability to communicate.
Reflecting on the moment she received the diagnosis in November 2022, Heming Willis described it as a traumatic experience. In a recent interview with People magazine, she recalled, “I’m sure the doctor was explaining what FTD is, [but] I couldn’t hear a single thing.” The overwhelming nature of the news left her feeling disoriented. “I had pins and needles going through my body. My ears were wafting,” she said, emphasizing the shock of the moment.
While she expressed relief at finally having an official diagnosis, she was unprepared for the absence of immediate support. “I was grateful to get a diagnosis, but there is no cure for this disease, and being sent on our way with no support, no nothing was really traumatic,” she noted. Heming Willis pointed out that this is not an isolated experience; many families face similar challenges when receiving such news.
Determined to better understand the condition, Heming Willis took it upon herself to research FTD. She sought guidance from experts and found a community of caregivers to connect with. “Early on, I was too scared to say anything to anyone. It felt like what was happening was only happening to us,” she shared. Over time, she found it beneficial to talk openly about their journey. “I realized it would be beneficial to talk about it and raise awareness so people get to the doctor sooner, can be diagnosed sooner, get into clinical trials,” she explained.
The isolating nature of her husband’s diagnosis has been a recurring theme in her narrative. In a previous interview with Diane Sawyer for an ABC special titled Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey, Heming Willis discussed the challenges of becoming Bruce’s full-time caregiver. She modified her daughters’ activities, limiting playdates and sleepovers, which had its own set of challenges. “I didn’t know if parents would feel comfortable leaving their child at our home, so, again, not only was I isolated, I isolated our whole family. You know, the girls were isolated too, and that was by design, I was doing that,” she reflected.
Recently, Willis’s family made the decision to relocate the actor to a one-story house situated near their main property. Heming Willis explained that the move was made to create a “calm and serene atmosphere” that suits her husband’s needs. “We have two young children, and it was just important that they had a home that supported their needs and that Bruce could have a place that supported his needs,” she stated. The new arrangement allows for a more relaxed environment where the children can enjoy playdates and sleepovers without concern. “Everything just feels a lot calmer, more at ease now,” Heming Willis concluded, highlighting the positive changes the family has embraced.
As they navigate this difficult journey, Emma Heming Willis continues to advocate for awareness and understanding of dementia, hoping to help others who may find themselves in similar situations.
