Storm Ends Aces’ 17-Game Streak, Sets Up Decisive Game 3

The Seattle Storm ended the Las Vegas Aces’ remarkable 17-game winning streak on August 2, 2023, defeating them 86-83 in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series. The victory not only halted the Aces’ impressive run but also forced a decisive Game 3, scheduled for Thursday in Las Vegas. This loss marked the first for the Aces since their defeat to the Minnesota Lynx, a staggering 53-point loss that initiated their historic streak.
In a game filled with momentum shifts, the Storm rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half. Key contributions from players like Skylar Diggins and Dominique Malonga were crucial. Diggins, instrumental in the final moments, executed a pivotal shot to extend Seattle’s lead to three points, demonstrating her confidence in high-pressure situations.
Storm’s Comeback Strategy
The Storm’s approach was characterized by physical play and strong rebounding, areas in which they outperformed their opponents. “We won the rebounding battle — that was a big deal for us,” Diggins stated. As the game progressed, Seattle exhibited remarkable composure, a testament to their experiences from previous tight games throughout the season.
Malonga, a 19-year-old rookie, showcased her talent by scoring a crucial three-point play in the final minute, leading the Storm. “I saw Dom streaking, so I threw it up to the basket,” Diggins described the moment. Malonga’s performance not only marked her second consecutive double-double but also made her the first teenager to achieve such a feat in WNBA playoff history.
Despite the Aces’ strong performance in the third quarter, where they reached their largest lead of 14 points, they struggled to maintain their advantage down the stretch. Head Coach Becky Hammon expressed disappointment over missed opportunities, particularly citing nine missed free throws and 15 turnovers. “I feel like we let that one go,” she remarked, emphasizing the need for improved execution in future games.
Defensive Adjustments and Key Players
The Storm’s defense played a pivotal role in their comeback, particularly in limiting the effectiveness of three-time MVP A’ja Wilson. Wilson, who recorded 21 points and 13 rebounds, failed to score in the final seven minutes of the game. The defensive strategy employed by Seattle, particularly by rookie Malonga, proved effective in constraining Wilson’s influence during critical possessions.
Coach Noelle Quinn praised Malonga’s defensive capabilities, highlighting her length and physicality as key factors in disrupting Wilson’s scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Hammon acknowledged the need for better offensive strategies to support Wilson, stating, “We’ve got to do a better job of getting [Malonga] in movement.”
The Aces will now face the challenge of bouncing back in the winner-takes-all Game 3, a first under Hammon’s leadership. The outcome of this matchup will determine which team advances in the playoffs, adding an extra layer of intensity to Thursday’s game in Las Vegas.
The Storm’s victory not only reflects their resilience but also sets the stage for an exciting conclusion to this playoff series, as both teams strive for advancement in the postseason.
