Mother Dies in Tragic Attack by Her Own Hybrid Wolves

A mother from **Salem Township, Pennsylvania**, lost her life in a tragic incident involving her own pet hybrid wolves. **Sandra L. Piovesan**, 50, was found deceased by her daughter on **April 30, 2012**, after being attacked by eight of the animals she had raised. These hybrid wolves, created through the breeding of domestic dogs with wild wolves, turned fatal in a horrifying scenario that raises significant concerns about the safety of keeping such animals as pets.
Sandra’s body was discovered inside the dogs’ electrified enclosure, which she had constructed to contain them. An autopsy conducted by the **Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office** revealed that she bled to death from severe injuries. Notably, **Dr. Cyril H. Wecht**, the coroner, indicated that the wolves appeared to have ceased their attack before her death, describing the circumstances as “curious.” He noted that the most severe wounds were found on her scalp and legs.
Gower, a **Westmoreland County Humane Agent**, expressed her long-standing concerns regarding the dangers of keeping hybrid wolves as pets. She mentioned that she had previously warned Sandra about the risks, stating it was only a matter of time before the unpredictable animals could turn aggressive. Gower noted that a friend of Sandra had been attacked by one of the dogs two years prior, although no formal complaint was lodged at the time.
The post-mortem examination clarified that there was no evidence of natural causes leading to Sandra’s incapacitation. “There is no evidence, in my opinion, of a heart attack, stroke, or any other condition involving a natural death that would have rendered her unconscious or caused her to become incapacitated,” Dr. Wecht stated. This finding has put to rest speculation that she may have fallen ill while in the pen with her dogs.
Animal experts, including Gower, have emphasized that hybrid wolves pose a greater risk to humans than their wild counterparts. They highlighted that hybrids are often more prone to aggressive behavior. Gower remarked on the community’s fear that the wolves could escape and harm someone, reflecting a broader concern about the implications of hybrid animal ownership.
Sandra had registered her animals as mixed-breed dogs with the county treasurer’s office, complicating the legal landscape surrounding her pets. Gower noted the inconsistency in Sandra’s identification of the animals, as they were referred to as dogs in official documents but advertised as wolves when sold. The exact number of puppies that Sandra sold and the identities of the buyers remain unclear.
Following the tragic event, authorities made the difficult decision to euthanize the eight hybrid wolves to facilitate the retrieval of Sandra’s body. Gower explained, “They had to be killed. There was no way of knowing which one killed her.” Additionally, two adult Rottweilers, which were owned by Sandra and kept inside her home, were confiscated and will be relocated to an animal sanctuary. Officials confirmed that these Rottweilers were not involved in the attack.
This tragic incident underscores the potential dangers associated with keeping hybrid wolves as pets, prompting a renewed discussion about regulations and safety measures in animal ownership.
