Bryan Robson Urges Tactical Change from Ruben Amorim at Manchester United

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has expressed his concerns regarding the tactical approach of current manager Ruben Amorim. Since taking over from Sporting Lisbon in November 2022, Amorim has faced significant challenges, leading to the club’s worst season performance in over 50 years. With United starting the current campaign with their poorest results in 33 years, speculation about Amorim’s future is growing, particularly following a recent 3-0 defeat against Manchester City, which marked the lowest win percentage for any permanent manager since the Second World War.
In a recent interview with OLBG, Robson emphasized the importance of tactical flexibility for a manager. He highlighted that if a team consistently employs the same strategy, opponents can effectively prepare to counter it. “As a manager, you have to have a few tactics up your sleeve,” Robson stated. “Otherwise, people know how to set up against you.”
Amorim has maintained a firm belief in his defensive setup, insisting, “When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man.” While some fans argue that his system is not suited for Manchester United, others suggest that a shift in formation could alleviate mounting pressure and improve results.
Robson advocated for a more conventional approach, noting that most top teams in the Premier League utilize a back four. He suggested that adopting a 4-3-3 formation, which capitalizes on the club’s attacking talent, could yield better outcomes. “If you’re playing with four at the back instead of three, you can mix it up a little bit more,” he explained.
For Robson, the key to success lies in scoring first and employing counter-attacks, particularly when using a back five. “If you’re chasing the game, I always feel that you’re lacking a midfield player or a forward,” he said, underscoring the potential limitations of Amorim’s current strategy.
Despite these criticisms, Robson acknowledged that it is still early in the season and that the team has faced tough competitors. He urged the players to adapt to Amorim’s system as they progress through the campaign.
In addition to his views on Amorim, Robson offered insights into young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has yet to start a Premier League match this season. He drew a parallel between Mainoo and former United player Paul Ince, describing Ince as an “underrated player” whose contributions were often overlooked.
“I definitely do think Mainoo could be the next Ince,” Robson remarked, expressing his concern when he heard rumors of Mainoo potentially leaving the club. He believes Mainoo possesses considerable talent but needs to solidify his overall game. Robson emphasized, “As long as he keeps his feet on the ground and works really hard at it, he could be a really good player.”
Amorim’s use of Mainoo in various positions last season, including as a false nine, has raised questions about the player’s role within the team. The manager’s recent comments suggesting that Mainoo is competing with Bruno Fernandes for a starting position drew attention. Following these remarks, Mainoo reportedly requested a loan move, which was ultimately denied.
As Manchester United navigates these tumultuous times, the club’s supporters are eager for clarity and improvement. Robson’s input highlights the critical junction at which Manchester United currently stands, as they seek to recalibrate their tactics and rediscover their competitive edge in both domestic and European competitions.
