Bjorn Borg Takes Life Day by Day After Cancer Diagnosis

Former tennis champion Bjorn Borg has opened up about his battle with prostate cancer, revealing that he now takes life “day by day, year by year.” During an emotional segment on BBC Breakfast, host Naga Munchetty discussed Borg’s journey with the illness, which he detailed in his latest autobiography. The 69-year-old sports icon described his diagnosis as being at “its most advanced stage,” yet expressed his determination to confront the disease with the same intensity as he did during his years on the court.
In his autobiography, Borg shared insights about his health struggles and treatment for what he calls an “extremely aggressive” form of prostate cancer. He stated that he underwent surgery in 2024 and is currently in remission, but requires regular scans to monitor his condition. On the program, Munchetty highlighted Borg’s commitment to fight the illness, saying he plans to approach each day as if it were a Wimbledon final.
Borg recounted a conversation with his doctor, who informed him about the severity of his condition. He recalled, “This is really, really bad, but it’s done. You have these sleeping cancer cells in your body.” The tennis legend acknowledged the uncertainty of his future health, stating, “It is going to be a fight in the future, and I hope I am going to be okay; I might be okay, I might not be okay.” He added, “Every six months I will test myself. Right now, I did my last test two weeks ago, so I’m okay.”
Charlie Stayt, another host on BBC Breakfast, remarked on Borg’s significance in the sports world, noting that viewers will hear more about his life, career, and ongoing health challenges in the future segments of the show.
Borg first received his diagnosis in 2023, and despite the challenges he has faced, his resilience shines through in his words. He continues to inspire many, exemplifying a fighting spirit that resonates beyond the sports arena. As he navigates this difficult chapter, Borg remains hopeful and committed to living fully, one day at a time.
BBC Breakfast airs daily at 06:00 on BBC One, providing updates on Borg’s journey and featuring his discussions about life beyond tennis.
