A new documentary sheds light on the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Jay Slater, a 19-year-old from Lancashire, who went missing during a holiday in Tenerife in June 2024. His remains were discovered nearly a month later, on July 15, in a remote area near the village of Masca. The film features a poignant moment when Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, opens the bag found with her son at the time of his death.

In a deeply emotional scene from the Channel 4 documentary, Duncan reveals her anguish as she reflects on her son’s untimely passing. Sitting in his room, she shares, “It’s been a year and I still can’t bring myself to unpack his case. I still smell his smell.” Addressing Jay’s dog, she adds, “You know, don’t you? You wonder where he is still when you come in here, don’t you?”

Duncan presents a black zip-bag, which she received from the Guardia Civil, containing items that provide insight into Jay’s last moments. As she carefully unpacks the bag, she discloses, “This is the bag Jay had with him when he was found. We got handed this from the Guardia Civil; it’s got his things in it.” Among the belongings are his driving licence, a bottle of aftershave, and lighters. Tragically, Jay also had his mobile phone, which he used to communicate with friends before his passing.

The documentary includes the final CCTV footage of Jay Slater hours before his death. Viewers see him at Papagayo Nightclub at 11:55 PM, followed by footage of him leaving at 01:04 AM. At 01:12 AM, he is seen being denied re-entry into the club, with a bouncer appearing to direct him away. At 02:40 AM, Jay sent a message to a friend stating, “Can’t get in Papagayo they got marker on me.” This was followed by a response from his friend, Lucy, at 02:48 AM, offering to help him return home. Jay’s reply at 02:49 AM was, “Doesn’t matter it’s OK. I on a mission.”

A coroner’s report released in July indicated that Jay had communicated with friends, claiming he was “in the middle of the mountains” and needed a drink. He subsequently embarked on a 14-hour journey home the following morning, leading to his disappearance and eventual death.

The documentary not only highlights the personal loss experienced by Duncan but also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by young people while travelling abroad. The story of Jay Slater resonates deeply, illustrating the profound impact of such tragedies on families and communities.
