Artist Oksana Kondratyeva Unveils Stained-Glass Tribute to Higgs Boson

London-based artist Oksana Kondratyeva has unveiled a new stained-glass artwork titled Discovery, inspired by the landmark detection of the Higgs boson at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012. Currently exhibited at the Romont Glass Museum in Switzerland, this piece reflects Kondratyeva’s deep engagement with the scientific breakthroughs that have reshaped our understanding of the universe.

Originally from Ukraine, Kondratyeva holds a PhD in the theory of architecture. Her recent visit to the LHC at CERN in 2023 left a profound impression on her. “CERN represents more than a laboratory; it is a gateway to the unknown,” she stated. The artwork draws from the awe she experienced while standing at what she describes as the “frontier of human knowledge.”

Artistic Interpretation of Scientific Concepts

The focal point of Discovery is a meticulously crafted circle that symbolizes the collision of two high-energy protons. Around this circle, lead lines trace the trajectories of particle decays as they navigate through a magnetic field. Right-curved lines depict positively charged particles, while left-curved lines indicate negatively charged ones. Straight lines represent neutral particles that remain unaffected by the magnetic field.

Kondratyeva’s geometric composition reflects the hidden symmetries of physical laws, illustrating patterns that only emerge when studying particle interactions. “Through glass, light, and colour, I sought to express the invisible forces and delicate symmetries that define our universe,” she explained. This artistic endeavor continues a long tradition of stained glass as a medium for storytelling, showcasing the intricate relationship between nature’s symmetries and humanity’s quest for order amidst chaos.

The use of mouth-blown flashed glass enhances the depth of the artwork, creating a gradient of colors that transition from bright and luminous at the center to cooler, subdued tones at the edges. This visual technique further emphasizes the themes of discovery and the nature of the universe.

Prior Collaborations and Future Aspirations

In 2022, Kondratyeva collaborated with Rigetti Computing to create a piece inspired by the packaging for a quantum chip. Titled Per scientiam ad astra (through science to the stars), this artwork was showcased at the 2024 British Glass Biennale held at the Ruskin Glass Centre in Stourbridge, UK.
