Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Runway Closed Following Drone Scare
Emergency measures were implemented at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on March 15, 2024, when a runway was closed due to a drone sighting. The incident occurred around 12:10 PM, prompting authorities to shut down the Polderbaan runway for approximately 45 minutes. The closure was initiated after a pilot of a Transavia flight reported seeing a drone flying at an altitude of about 150 meters, approximately 50 meters from his aircraft.
In response to the sighting, the Royal Marechaussee, the military police, launched an operation that included aerial surveillance. Despite their efforts, neither the drone nor its operator could be located. A spokesperson for the Royal Marechaussee described the situation as “quite unique,” suggesting that the operator was likely flying the drone as a hobby. Authorities noted that the drone was small and confirmed that air traffic was not significantly endangered.
Impact on Air Traffic and Safety Precautions
As a precautionary measure, air traffic was diverted from the Polderbaan to the Zwanenburgbaan runway during the incident. A spokesperson for the Royal Marechaussee stated, “For safety reasons, air traffic was diverted at that time.” Fortunately, the situation was resolved without further disruption, and normal operations resumed shortly thereafter.
This incident comes amidst a backdrop of increasing drone activity in Europe, raising safety and security concerns. In Denmark, the Defence Ministry reported multiple drone sightings at various military facilities over the past week. These sightings have included incidents near the Karup Air Base, Denmark’s largest military installation, leading to temporary shutdowns of local airports.
Growing Concerns Over Drone Activity in Europe
While the authorities in Denmark have not confirmed specific sightings at Karup, they acknowledged a series of reported drone activities that have heightened public anxiety. The Defence Command Denmark refrained from providing detailed information, citing operational security and ongoing investigations. Reports also indicated drone sightings in proximity to other military bases, including Skrydstrup Air Base.
On March 15, local media reported that drones were observed both inside and outside the perimeter of the Karup Air Base around 20:00. Simon Skelkjær, the duty manager at the Central and West Jutland Police, confirmed these sightings. Although civil air traffic was temporarily restricted, the impact was minimal due to the current lack of commercial flights in the area.
The increasing frequency of unexplained drone activity, particularly around military sites, has raised alarms about security in Northern Europe, especially given the context of rising tensions linked to Russian military actions. In response to the drone sightings, Danish authorities are encouraging the public to report any suspicious activities to the police.
As the situation develops, both Amsterdam and Danish authorities are likely to reassess existing protocols related to drone regulations and airspace security. The incidents serve as a reminder of the challenges posed by unauthorized drone operations in areas critical to national security.
