A new initiative aimed at preventing drink spiking has launched in Belfast, thanks to a collaboration between the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and Queen’s University. The program, named the ‘Drink Check’ initiative, was introduced during Freshers’ Week and is designed to enhance safety for patrons in bars and clubs across the city.

The initiative emerged in response to concerns raised by students, who expressed their worries to the Queen’s Neighbourhood Engagement team. As part of this project, Queen’s University has acquired specialist drink spiking test kits that will be distributed across 33 popular venues in Belfast. This effort aims not only to provide reassurance to attendees but also to raise awareness about the risks of drink spiking.

Participating venues will prominently display posters indicating that drink testing is available on-site. They have received drink testing strips which allow bar staff to check drinks suspected of being tampered with. If a customer believes their drink has been spiked, they can approach the bar for assistance. Should the test indicate tampering, the PSNI will be alerted to investigate further. In such cases, CCTV footage from the venue will be reviewed to identify the responsible individuals.

In addition to the testing kits, all participating venues are equipped with materials related to the ‘Ask for Angela’ program. This initiative provides a discreet way for patrons to seek assistance from bar staff using a code word if they feel unsafe or vulnerable.

The Drink Check initiative represents a proactive approach to tackling the growing concern of drink spiking in social environments. By fostering a safer atmosphere, the program aims to encourage students and patrons to enjoy their nights out without fear.

As the initiative progresses, the PSNI and Queen’s University aim to evaluate its impact on safety within Belfast’s nightlife, ensuring that students and other patrons can engage in their social activities with increased confidence.
