Gen Z Critiques Dating Apps as ‘Superficial’ and ‘Unhealthy’

A recent study reveals that the majority of Generation Z singles view dating apps as increasingly superficial and unhealthy. Research conducted among 1,000 adults who have used a dating app in the last five years indicates that 70 percent of Gen Z participants feel that these platforms have detracted from the authenticity of modern dating.
The findings, commissioned by the wine brand 19 Crimes, show that 22 percent of Gen Z respondents label dating apps as unhealthy. More than half of them express that engaging with these platforms resembles playing a game rather than fostering genuine connections.
Changing Standards in Dating Preferences
Interestingly, Generation Z places less emphasis on physical appearance when it comes to dating. Only 27 percent of Gen Z singles consider appearance the most critical factor in a dating profile. In contrast, 36 percent of Millennials and 35 percent of older generations, including Generation X and Baby Boomers, prioritize looks more heavily.
Overall, participants reported that only a third of their interactions on dating apps were with individuals they deemed “nice.” Conversely, 40 percent described others as “mean” or “weird.” The study also highlighted prevalent red flags among users, with 31 percent citing an extensive list of demands as concerning, while 25 percent were put off by arrogance or the use of filtered photos.
The research also revealed a troubling trend where users reported being ghosted an average of seven times after going on a date, while they admitted to ghosting someone themselves five times. Furthermore, 22 percent of respondents claimed to have been catfished or misled, a figure that is alarmingly close to the 29 percent who felt they had made a meaningful connection on the apps.
Rethinking Dating: An Alternative Approach
In response to these sentiments, 19 Crimes is launching a Halloween-themed alternative to conventional dating apps. The company has partnered with psychic medium Sam O’Brien to create an event called “Read and Buried.” This unique singles night invites individuals to abandon their apps and instead engage in a more unconventional dating experience by attempting to connect with “ghosts.”
O’Brien, who has gained recognition as a psychic to celebrities such as Rylan, Tess Daly, and Kylie Minogue, will facilitate the event by guiding attendees as they meet not-so-living guests. O’Brien stated, “Dating today can feel soulless, so why not bring in a few actual souls? Whether you’ve been ghosted or just ghost-curious, Read and Buried is about breaking the dating rules, enjoying a new experience, and maybe even making a supernatural connection.”
The study also indicated that nearly half of the respondents would prefer to meet potential partners at social events, rather than through apps. Friend introductions and shared hobbies are also highly desirable avenues.
Younger generations are increasingly open to unconventional experiences. A substantial 71 percent of Gen Z and 68 percent of Millennials expressed interest in attending an in-person dating event with a unique twist.
Chantal McDowell from 19 Crimes remarked, “Our research shows that modern dating isn’t working for everyone. With Read and Buried, we’re inviting singles to ditch the apps, embrace the unexpected, and have a little rebellious fun while they’re at it. What better way to meet someone this Halloween, alive or dead, than over a glass of wine?”
The findings underscore a growing discontent among younger singles regarding traditional dating methods, prompting a search for new and innovative ways to connect.
