Asda has announced an ambitious expansion plan, set to introduce 22 new Express stores throughout the UK starting in October 2023. The supermarket chain will open its first new location in Castleford, West Yorkshire, in early October, followed by 21 additional openings in various locations by the end of the month.

This move marks a significant step in Asda’s strategy to enhance its presence in high-traffic urban areas, residential neighborhoods, and transport hubs. The retailer’s Express stores, which typically offer around 3,000 branded and own-label products, cater to a diverse range of customer needs. These include convenience items for quick top-up shopping, ready-to-eat meals for lunch, and ingredients for home-cooked dinners.

Asda’s Express format has shown impressive performance, with a reported like-for-like sales growth of 8.6% in the second quarter of this year, outperforming the broader convenience market. David Lepley, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Asda, expressed excitement about the expansion, stating, “We’re thrilled to kick off the next phase of our Express rollout and bring our heritage in delivering outstanding value to more locations across the UK.”

Lepley also highlighted the rapid growth of the Express format, noting that in just three years, Asda has expanded from no convenience stores to nearly 500 locations by the end of 2023.

Asda’s expansion follows a strategic pause in launching standalone Express stores while the company focused on converting 469 locations that were acquired from the Co-op and EG Group. The new Express locations are strategically chosen to meet the needs of customers in areas where Asda had previously limited presence.

The complete list of new Asda Express store locations includes:
