Belfast City Council Spends Over £11,000 on New Bin Tags

Belfast City Council has implemented a new bin tagging system aimed at improving waste management across the city. The initiative, introduced this summer, encourages residents to properly sort their waste, helping to prevent overflowing bins and ensuring safer collection practices. According to a recent Freedom of Information request from Belfast Live, the council has already spent over £11,600 on these new tags.
Starting from August 4, 2025, bins that do not close fully or are lined with plastic will receive an amber tag as a first warning. This tag informs residents of the necessary steps to rectify the situation for future collections. During the initial week of the rollout, approximately 1,700 tags were issued to bins that were found to be either overfilled or improperly lined.
The council has outlined a clear process for addressing these issues. If a bin continues to be presented in an unacceptable manner, it will ultimately receive a red tag, indicating that it will not be emptied. The implementation of red tags is scheduled to commence on September 29, 2025, allowing residents ample time to adjust to the new guidelines.
In discussing the initiative, Councillor Ruth Brooks, Chair of the council’s People and Communities Committee, emphasized the importance of supporting residents in their recycling efforts. She noted that many other councils have already adopted similar practices. Brooks stated, “This will reduce the risk of accidents at work and also reflect upcoming changes to how our lorries operate in terms of emptying bins which are overflowing or have liners attached.”
The tagging system aims to enhance not only the efficiency of waste collection but also the safety of council staff. By following the new guidelines, residents can contribute to a cleaner environment, while also assisting the crews responsible for this essential service.
As this initiative progresses, the council remains focused on educating residents about proper waste disposal. The introduction of the tagging system is a step towards a more organized and environmentally-friendly approach to waste management in Belfast.
