Expert Reveals Ideal Cleaning Frequency for Air Fryers

A recent study has brought clarity to a common kitchen debate: how often should air fryers be cleaned? Conducted by the meal kit delivery service HelloFresh, the survey indicated that a significant portion of the British population does not adhere to recommended cleaning practices.
The results unveiled that 47% of respondents do not clean their air fryers after every use. While air fryers are celebrated for their convenience in preparing meals, the findings suggest that many users may be neglecting proper hygiene.
Among the surveyed individuals, 37% reported cleaning their air fryer after each use, while another 37% stated they clean it every few uses. A smaller segment, 9%, admitted to rarely cleaning their device. Notably, 16% of participants indicated they do not own an air fryer, and 1% claimed they never clean theirs at all.
Health Risks Highlighted by Experts
Mimi Morley, Senior Recipe Development Manager at HelloFresh, expressed surprise at the survey’s findings. “It’s a little surprising that so many people aren’t cleaning their air fryer after every use,” she said. Morley cautioned against the common misconception that the heat generated in air fryers eliminates bacteria.
“Pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli might actually be able to grow and can be a hazard to your health. That’s why cleaning your air fryer after every use is recommended,” Morley emphasized.
Moreover, neglecting to clean the appliance can adversely affect the flavor of meals prepared in it. “When cleaning is quick and easy, why would you risk impacting the flavour of your delicious meal?” she added.
The survey also highlighted a generational divide in cleaning habits. Among younger respondents, 19% of Gen Z participants reported that they rarely or never clean their air fryers. In contrast, only 8% of individuals over the age of 55 admitted to similar cleaning habits.
Effective Cleaning Practices for Air Fryers
Proper maintenance of an air fryer is straightforward. To clean the device effectively, users should first unplug it. The basket and tray should be removed and washed, while the interior and heating element need to be wiped down to remove grease. Cleaning the exterior and controls with a cloth and a non-abrasive antibacterial spray is crucial, and reassembling the fryer should only be done once all components have dried.
As air fryers continue to grow in popularity, understanding and implementing proper cleaning practices will not only enhance their performance but also ensure the health and safety of those who use them.
