First Minister John Swinney met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on July 25, 2023, to discuss tariffs affecting Scotch whisky. Swinney’s visit to the United States aims to address trade and political concerns, engaging with representatives from both major US political parties.

In a video shared on social media platform X, Swinney confirmed the meeting, emphasizing discussions surrounding the zero-for-zero tariff strategy. He stated that this approach could significantly benefit the whisky industry on both sides of the Atlantic. “I spent the morning with representatives of the whisky industry from Scotland and the United States and we discussed the zero-for-zero approach on tariffs, which would help the industry to flourish,” he noted.

The Oval Office meeting was scheduled for approximately 30 minutes, taking place at 7:00 PM UK time. During their discussion, Swinney presented arguments for eliminating tariffs on Scotch whisky, highlighting the economic advantages it would bring. “I’ve now taken those arguments to the Oval Office to President Trump, and we’ve had a constructive discussion about the reasons why Scotch whisky would benefit from no tariffs,” he added.

Advocating for Scotland’s Interests

Prior to his meeting with Trump, Swinney engaged with representatives from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (Discus) and the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) at Mount Vernon. This historic site, the former estate of founding father George Washington, is notable for housing a whisky distillery that Washington established in 1798, operated by his Scottish farmhand, James Anderson.

Swinney’s trip underscores his commitment to advocate for Scotland’s interests on the international stage. He expressed his determination to “press the case” for improved tariff arrangements for Scotch whisky, which plays a vital role in Scotland’s economy. The whisky sector is not only a cultural asset but also a major contributor to export revenues.

As the First Minister continues his discussions in Washington, the outcome of these meetings could have significant implications for the future of Scotch whisky in the global market. The focus on tariff negotiations reflects broader trade relations and the importance of whisky as a key export product for Scotland.

The outcome of Swinney’s advocacy efforts remains to be seen, but his engagement with high-level officials indicates a proactive approach to protecting and promoting Scotland’s interests.
