Global LNG Demand Surges as Oil Giants Invest Heavily

Demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) continues to defy predictions of decline, as major oil companies ramp up investments in this sector. Despite expectations that the transition to renewable energy would diminish the need for fossil fuels, recent reports indicate that demand for natural gas remains robust, prompting companies like Shell, TotalEnergies, BP, Exxon, and Chevron to expand their LNG operations.
According to a report by CNBC journalist Sam Meredith, the latest quarterly results from several oil supermajors highlight their commitment to LNG as a critical component of their business strategies. For instance, Shell announced plans to increase its LNG capacity by 12 million tons by 2030. Similarly, TotalEnergies aims to boost its LNG volumes under management by 50% by the same year, while BP is developing an LNG hub along the coasts of Senegal and Mauritania.
The upward trajectory of LNG demand is underscored by projections from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which anticipates that global demand will pick up again in 2026, driven by an increase in supply and growing consumption in Asia. The IEA specifically noted that LNG supply is expected to rise by 7%, or 40 billion cubic meters (bcm), marking the most significant increase since 2019.
Challenges to Energy Transition Goals
Despite the optimism surrounding LNG, concerns linger about its compatibility with the goals of the energy transition. Forecasts suggest that natural gas demand could peak before 2030, a view supported by various climate-focused organizations. Critics argue that the increasing reliance on LNG threatens the progress towards sustainable energy goals.
Yet, evidence from the European Union (EU) indicates a complex reality. In the first quarter of 2023, the EU recorded a 3.4% rise in carbon dioxide emissions compared to the previous year, driven by higher electricity generation from coal and natural gas. This increase occurred despite substantial investments in wind and solar energy, suggesting that renewable sources have not yet effectively met the region’s energy demands.
The International Monetary Fund highlighted that electricity needs from data centers, which are projected to surpass those of countries like Germany and France, will escalate in the coming years. By 2030, data centers are expected to consume as much electricity as India, outpacing the projected demand from electric vehicles.
Future Outlook for LNG and the Energy Market
The implications of these trends are significant for the energy market. As demand for dispatchable electricity—power that can be generated on demand—grows, gas-fired power plants, along with coal and nuclear facilities, are positioned to play a critical role in stabilizing supply. This shift has prompted major technology companies to enter contracts with energy providers across these sectors.
In light of these developments, it may be time to reassess the goals of the energy transition. The current trajectory of energy demand and supply suggests that the ambitious targets set for reducing reliance on fossil fuels may need to be revised to align more closely with the realities of energy consumption. The ongoing growth of LNG presents both opportunities and challenges as the world navigates the complex landscape of energy production and environmental sustainability.
