The historic White Hart Inn in Bath is undergoing a significant transformation following the approval of comprehensive renovation plans. This Grade II-listed establishment, located in Widcombe, has been closed since March 2024 and is in urgent need of restoration. The Walcot Group, which acquired the pub last year as part of its expansion across the South West, is spearheading the revitalization effort.

Scope of the Renovation

The approved renovation plans aim to preserve and restore the pub’s historic features while modernizing its facilities. Specific enhancements include extensive interior and exterior works, alongside landscaping improvements. Notably, the plans involve the transformation of a residential unit, a former gin distillery, and a retail space located at 1a Prior Park Road. This renovation will facilitate an enlarged pub and bar area, separate dining options, a new kitchen, and the addition of 10 guest rooms.

According to the Bath and North East Somerset Council, the existing use of the property is well established, and the proposed development is expected to enhance dining and accommodation options in the area. Council officers noted that while the development will involve the loss of a dwelling, this change is crucial for facilitating community enhancement and heritage works at the site.

A Vision for the Community

The applicants expressed a commitment to re-establishing the White Hart Inn as a central hub for the Widcombe community. Their vision includes not only a revitalized pub but also a restaurant, private dining spaces, and a landscaped courtyard garden. This ambitious project aims to blend historic and modern elements, creating a vibrant gathering place for both locals and visitors.

As Bath continues to evolve, the revival of the White Hart Inn symbolizes a significant investment in the area’s cultural and social landscape. With renovations set to commence soon, the project is anticipated to breathe new life into the historic pub, reaffirming its status as a cherished community landmark.
