Holidaymakers Warned About Legal Risks of Carrying Nicotine Pouches

Travellers planning to visit France and other European countries should be aware of potential legal consequences related to carrying nicotine pouches. The product, commonly used for nicotine consumption without smoking, is banned in France and several other nations, which could lead to fines or criminal penalties for unsuspecting holidaymakers.
According to KLAR, a producer of nicotine pouches, over 590,000 users in the UK may find themselves at risk while travelling. The growing popularity of these products is prompting calls for increased awareness among consumers regarding local laws. Germany and the Netherlands have also implemented bans on nicotine pouches, further complicating matters for travellers.
Local laws can change frequently, making it crucial for individuals to research the regulations of their destination. Travellers are encouraged to check official government advice and relevant consulate websites prior to departure. KLAR has cautioned that possession of nicotine pouches could lead to consequences including “fines, confiscation, or even criminal penalties.”
Practical Tips for Travellers
For those who do decide to travel with nicotine pouches, KLAR’s Chief Risk Reduction Officer, Tomas Hammargren, has shared valuable tips. He recommends keeping the pouches in their original packaging, allowing customs officials to easily identify the product, which can streamline the inspection process.
Another suggestion is to consider whether the product is “fly-friendly.” Notably, KLAR’s nicotine pouches do not contain liquids or batteries, making them safe for both hand luggage and checked bags without the risk of leaks or battery issues. Travellers should also familiarize themselves with their airline’s policies regarding the use of such products during flights. While nicotine pouches are often permitted, vaping products may not be.
Planning ahead is essential, particularly regarding the quantity of products to bring. Many countries may have limited availability of nicotine alternatives, so stocking up prior to travel is advisable.
Passport Validity Checks Essential for Travel
In addition to understanding local laws, travellers are advised to confirm their passport validity before embarking on their journeys. Richard Fleetwood, postmaster at the Town Centre Washington Post Office, emphasised that many individuals overlook the rules surrounding passport validity when planning trips.
“My top tip to all travellers is simple—plan ahead,” Fleetwood stated. “Be sure to check your passport’s expiry date and validity before booking your trip, and always review the travel rules for your destination.”
He further noted that for trips to countries within the Schengen area, including many EU nations, passports must be issued within the last 10 years and must have at least three months’ validity remaining beyond the date of departure.
By staying informed and planning accordingly, travellers can avoid unnecessary stress and complications during their holidays.
