Hyderabad’s Ganesh Chaturthi Festivities Generate Rs 650 Crore Boost

Hyderabad’s Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations have ignited a significant economic boost, generating over Rs 650 crore this year. The festivities have proved lucrative for local traders, particularly in areas like Dhoolpet, showcasing the festival’s profound economic impact in addition to its cultural significance.
Economic Surge Amid Cultural Celebrations
The capital city of Telangana is currently vibrant with the grand celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi, which has benefitted both small and large enterprises. City officials estimate that the festival has resulted in substantial profits across various sectors, with Dhoolpet alone recording around Rs 50 crore in trade.
The preparations for Ganesh idols commence months in advance, with artisans crafting everything from small figurines to towering statues. For numerous families, this trade is crucial for their livelihoods, as the demand for materials such as clay, plaster of Paris, paints, and decorative supplies has created a flourishing industry. Artisans and labourers across the city are engaged in this vibrant economic activity.
Wider Economic Impact Beyond Idol Making
The economic impact of the festival extends well beyond idol-making. There has been a noticeable increase in the demand for electric lamps, garlands, canopies, and various decorative items, significantly benefiting tent houses, florists, and electricians. Sales of puja essentials, including coconuts, fruits, turmeric, saffron, and camphor, have surged, leading to notable revenue increases for street vendors and small shops.
Food businesses have also experienced a substantial boost, particularly those specializing in traditional sweets like laddus and modaks, along with anna prasads for devotees. The city’s famous laddu auctions alone attract significant sums, while sweet shops and catering services work diligently to meet the heightened festival demand.
In addition, considerable amounts are spent on organizing Annaprasadam at mandapams, further contributing to the local economy. Logistics also play a crucial role during the celebrations, with heavy vehicles, tractors, and cranes hired to transport idols to mandapams and immersion sites, often incurring costs in the thousands of rupees per idol.
This year’s Ganesh immersion festival has not only served as a religious and cultural spectacle but has also emerged as a major economic driver for Hyderabad. The event has reinforced the city’s status as a hub for festive commerce and artisan enterprise, highlighting the interconnectedness of culture and economy.
