Kaduna Governor Signs N985.9 Billion Budget with Focus on Education
Governor Uba Sani has officially signed the 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, establishing a budget of N985.9 billion for Kaduna State. This budget prioritizes education, allocating 25 percent of the total funds to this critical sector. The signing took place on Monday at the Government House in Kaduna, where Sani emphasized the budget’s role in fostering sustainable growth and enhancing the state’s developmental foundations.
A significant portion of the budget, approximately N698.9 billion or 70.9 percent, is earmarked for capital expenditure. This allocation aims to advance infrastructure projects, stimulate economic growth, and improve service delivery across the state. In contrast, recurrent expenditure is set at N287 billion, which constitutes 29.1 percent of the budget. This portion is intended to ensure that essential government services operate effectively and efficiently.
Key Allocations and Strategic Focus
Governor Sani detailed the budget breakdown, highlighting that the education sector received the largest allocation due to its vital role in breaking the cycle of poverty and securing a brighter future for children. He stated, “Knowledge is the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and securing the future of children.”
In addition to education, infrastructure and rural transformation also account for 25 percent of the budget. This reflects the administration’s commitment to improving community connectivity, enhancing market accessibility, and boosting economic activity throughout Kaduna. The health sector has been allocated 15 percent, demonstrating the government’s belief that a healthy population is fundamental to productivity and dignity.
Agriculture and food security are also priorities, with 11.65 percent of the budget dedicated to these areas. Sani remarked that this allocation reinforces the government’s commitment to food security, empowering farmers, and strengthening the local economy.
The governor also noted that the budget includes provisions for climate change initiatives, nutrition programs, and environmental sustainability. He emphasized the importance of recognizing current challenges and responsibilities towards future generations.
Community Empowerment and Fiscal Responsibility
Titled “Budget of Consolidation, Transformation and Inclusive Development,” the budget aims to address historical exclusionary practices. Notably, N100 million has been allocated to each ward in the state for community-driven projects. Sani stated, “We are empowering our people to determine their priorities and drive development from the grassroots.”
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline, stating that the 2026 budget will introduce no new loans. He highlighted that N114.9 billion has already been paid in debt servicing, indicating a proactive approach to managing the state’s financial obligations.
“The 2026 budget is more than figures and projections; it promises progress, opportunity, and a better quality of life for every citizen of Kaduna State,” he said.
Sani acknowledged that the success of the budget hinges on effective implementation and collaboration with the state House of Assembly. He expressed confidence in maintaining a cordial relationship with the legislature, stating, “Together, we have helped position Kaduna as Nigeria’s bastion of peace and tranquility, and together, we will sustain this stability as the bedrock of development.”
By reinforcing cooperation, Sani aims to deepen inclusion and ensure that Kaduna State works for all its residents, ultimately achieving the goals laid out in the newly signed budget.
