Nigeria Provides Critical Intelligence for US Airstrikes on Terrorists
Nigeria has played a pivotal role in the recent United States airstrikes targeting terrorist positions within its borders. This collaboration followed high-level discussions between Nigerian officials and Washington, as confirmed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar. He stated that the intelligence provided by Nigeria was instrumental in executing the airstrikes.
In a video released on X, Tuggar revealed that he engaged in two critical phone conversations with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio prior to the operation. The first call occurred just 19 minutes before the strikes were executed, with another conversation taking place five minutes before the action began. Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s significant contribution, stating, “It’s Nigeria that provided the intelligence.”
Cooperation Focused on Security
Tuggar highlighted that Nigeria’s collaboration with the United States is part of a broader strategy to combat terrorism. He noted that this partnership is guided by a commitment to protect all citizens, regardless of their religion or background. “Nigeria has remained consistent in its approach… to work with all partners that are committed to the fight against terrorism,” he said, underscoring the inclusive nature of the initiative.
The discussions with Rubio also covered the internal authorization process for the strikes, as well as public messaging to clarify the operation’s intent. Tuggar mentioned that President Bola Tinubu approved the operation and agreed to coordinated statements reinforcing that the airstrikes were directed at terrorism rather than any particular community.
“It was agreed… that it is a strike against terrorism and that it is part of the ongoing joint operations between Nigeria and collaboration between Nigeria and the United States,” Tuggar explained. He reiterated that the operation aimed solely to safeguard lives and maintain security in the region.
Operational Details and Future Collaboration
The cooperation between Nigeria and the United States has been described as a significant step in their ongoing fight against terrorist threats. Tuggar stated, “We have been working closely with the Americans… to stop the death of innocent Nigerians.” He expressed optimism about future collaboration in addressing these security challenges.
The airstrikes represent a decisive measure in the ongoing battle against terrorism, with Nigeria playing a crucial role in intelligence-sharing and operational planning. As the situation evolves, both nations appear committed to enhancing their partnership in the fight against terrorism.
In conclusion, the recent airstrikes underscore the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism. Nigeria’s intelligence contribution demonstrates its proactive stance in working with allies to protect its citizens and maintain stability in the region.
