Lloyds Bank Launches Cash Deposit Feature at Local Shops

Lloyds Bank has introduced a new feature in its mobile banking app that allows customers to deposit cash at local shops, eliminating the need for a branch visit. Starting on August 26, 2023, customers will be able to deposit banknotes and coins at over 30,000 PayPoint locations across the United Kingdom. This initiative is designed to enhance convenience for customers who can now combine everyday errands, such as grocery shopping, with banking tasks.
The new cash deposit feature is accessible through the “everyday” section of the Lloyds, Halifax, or Bank of Scotland mobile apps. Users can generate a two-hour valid barcode, which is scanned in-store before handing over their cash. Customers can deposit up to £300 per day, with a maximum of £600 per month. According to Lloyds Bank, funds should appear in the user’s account within minutes after the transaction is completed.
Convenience Amid Branch Closures
The introduction of this feature comes at a time when traditional bank branches have been closing rapidly. While Lloyds Bank maintains its own branches and offers deposits at over 11,500 post offices, the partnership with PayPoint significantly increases the number of accessible locations, particularly in areas underserved by bank branches.
Gabby Collins, payments director at Lloyds Bank, stated that the new feature is “ideal if you are popping in for milk or dropping off a parcel.” This sentiment is echoed by Nick Wiles, chief executive of PayPoint, who described the initiative as a way to provide “essential services at the heart of communities.”
Impact on Customers
While this update does not alter interest rates or account terms, it aims to make cash deposits more convenient for customers, especially those living far from a bank branch or working irregular hours. This move reflects a broader industry trend of banks collaborating with retail networks to ensure cash services remain accessible, despite a decline in in-person banking.
With this new functionality, local shops could become the most efficient way to safely deposit cash into a bank account. As many customers continue to navigate rising living costs, innovations like this one may offer significant time savings and ease of access to banking services.
