Nestlé CFO Anna Manz Discusses Leadership Changes Following Dismissal

During a recent discussion at the Barclays Global Consumer Staples Conference, Anna Manz, the Chief Financial Officer of Nestlé, addressed the unexpected leadership changes within the company following the dismissal of former CEO Laurent Freixe. Freixe’s departure was linked to an investigation into an undisclosed romantic relationship with a subordinate, which raised concerns about potential favoritism.
Manz explained that the company received an initial report in May alleging the inappropriate relationship, prompting an internal investigation overseen by the board. At that time, no evidence was found to support the allegations and Freixe publicly stated that there had been no misconduct. However, as more reports surfaced with varying details, the board opted to initiate a second, broader external investigation. This led to findings that suggested a breach of conduct, ultimately resulting in Freixe’s removal.
Succession Planning and Immediate Appointment
The discussion also touched on the swift appointment of Philipp Navratil, the former head of Nespresso, as the new CEO. Manz clarified that the board had been actively engaged in succession planning, given Freixe’s age of 63. “We’ve had lots of questions about succession at Nestlé,” she said. The board had already conducted significant groundwork in identifying both internal and external candidates, which facilitated Navratil’s prompt appointment without a formal hiring process.
“Philipp is a really strategic, thoughtful leader,” Manz stated, noting his pragmatic approach and ability to execute effectively. She highlighted Navratil’s experience in successfully launching Starbucks products across 90 countries, which showcased his capability to adapt and lead in a dynamic environment. Manz expressed confidence that Navratil would bring a fresh perspective and a sense of urgency to drive change at Nestlé.
Future Engagement with Investors
As the company prepares for its upcoming quarterly update on October 16, 2025, Navratil is expected to address investors for the first time. Manz mentioned that the company is proactively looking for opportunities to introduce him to the investment community before this date.
This leadership transition marks a pivotal moment for Nestlé as it navigates the complexities of corporate governance and maintains momentum within the business. The focus now shifts to how Navratil will shape the company’s future direction and address the challenges ahead.
