New Look Closes Harrow Store Amid Ongoing High Street Decline

New Look is set to close its Harrow Town Centre store on September 17, 2023, marking a significant loss for the high street after more than two decades of operation. The store, located on Station Road, has initiated a closing-down sale, offering discounts of up to 70% on a variety of items to attract local shoppers before it shuts its doors for good.

A notice displayed in the store reads, “Thanks for having us, Harrow. This store will be closing on Wednesday, 17th September. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to find us at newlook.com with hundreds of new styles dropping every week!” The closure has sparked disappointment among community members, with social media reactions highlighting concerns about the declining number of physical retail options in the area. One local expressed frustration, stating, “There won’t be any store on high street now. One after another stores are closing down. I am not the online shopping person.” Another commenter lamented, “This is terrible. The rents and rates are too high. We are decimating our local high streets just to make everyone shop online.”

This closure is part of a broader restructuring initiative affecting New Look’s portfolio, as the brand has already shuttered several locations this year, with at least 14 additional stores anticipated to close in the near future. Another branch in Scarborough is also scheduled to close on the same day as the Harrow location.

New Look’s ownership group, which includes investment firms Alcentra and Brait, has reportedly been considering a potential sale of the business. According to Sky News, both firms, which have held control since 2020, are collaborating with advisers at Rothschild to explore strategic options for the retailer’s future.

Despite these challenges, a spokesperson for New Look emphasized that the company is performing well. “Management are focused on running the business and executing the strategy for long-term growth,” the spokesperson stated. They further noted, “The company is performing well, with strong momentum driven by a successful summer trading period and notable online market share gains.”

As New Look navigates these changes, the impact on local high streets continues to grow, raising concerns about the future of retail in communities across the country.
