Popular Edinburgh Bar Expands with New ‘Downtown’ Basement Space

A well-known bar in Edinburgh, The Boston Bar, has officially doubled in size with the launch of its new basement area named ‘Downtown.’ Located on Hanover Street, the establishment aims to blend the vibrant atmosphere of Boston with traditional Irish pub culture, making it a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
The expansion introduces a spacious new seating area characterized by wooden furnishings, leather seating, and exposed sandstone walls. The décor features hand-picked antiques sourced from Ireland, the USA, and local auction houses, creating a unique ambience for patrons. The newly opened Downtown space accommodates both small, intimate gatherings and larger groups, with high-top tables designed for socializing.
Edward Fox, the owner of The Boston Bar, expressed enthusiasm about the new area, stating, “We wanted Downtown to feel like a little slice of my wife’s homeland – Donegal in the heart of Edinburgh, but with a nod to Boston’s gritty charm. It’s a space that’s warm, welcoming and full of life – somewhere you can pop in for a quiet drink or make a night of it.”
With the expansion, eight large televisions have been installed to cater to sports fans, showcasing various events including Gaelic football and hurling matches. The bar has also planned a series of events, including traditional music sessions, which will commence on September 15, 2025, as well as Irish comedy nights set to launch in October.
To celebrate the opening of Downtown, The Boston Bar has partnered with Coors to offer a giveaway for a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Boston, USA. The prize, valued at £7,000, includes return flights from Edinburgh, four-star hotel accommodation, curated experiences, and a food and drink allowance. Entrants can participate by sharing the competition post on Instagram and following specific guidelines.
The bar’s menu reflects its Irish-Bostonian fusion, serving classic pints of Guinness alongside craft Irish beers. Innovative cocktails are also featured, including the Galway Girl and Fenway Old Fashioned.
As Downtown opens its doors, The Boston Bar continues to cement its reputation as a lively venue that offers a unique blend of cultures, providing a welcoming environment for all who seek to enjoy a drink and experience the best of both Irish and Bostonian traditions.
