Rayner’s Lawyers Claim Innocence Amid Tax Controversy
Angela Rayner’s legal team has asserted that they are being unfairly targeted in the ongoing scrutiny surrounding her property purchase. The law firm, which facilitated the acquisition of an £800,000 flat in Hove, stated they are not responsible for providing any tax advice to the Deputy Prime Minister. In a statement to The Telegraph, Joanna Verrico, managing director of the family-run firm, emphasized that their standard procedure involves referring clients to tax experts.
“We acted for Ms Rayner when she purchased the flat in Hove. We did not and never have given tax or trust advice,” Verrico explained. “The stamp duty for the Hove flat was calculated using HMRC‘s own online calculator based on the figures and the information provided by Ms Rayner. We believe that we did everything correctly and in good faith.”
The controversy escalated when Rayner acknowledged underpaying her stamp duty by £40,000, following fresh legal guidance. She reportedly paid £30,000 in stamp duty, which she insists was based on professional advice at the time of the purchase.
Labour Party Under Pressure
As Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and Housing Secretary, Rayner has now referred herself to the Prime Minister’s ethics watchdog. A report regarding her conduct is anticipated as early as Friday afternoon. This move follows intense pressure on her from within the political sphere.
Labour leader Keir Starmer has faced questions regarding Rayner’s future in the party, specifically whether he would take action if she is found to have breached the ministerial code. Starmer declined to commit to any decision, stating, “I will make a decision on what I see,” and emphasizing the need to establish the facts, which he believes the independent advisor will clarify.
In contrast, the opposition Conservative Party has ramped up calls for Rayner’s resignation. They have spotlighted comments made by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in his biography, where he stated, “If a minister, any minister, makes a serious breach of the rules, they will be out.”
The unfolding situation raises significant implications for Rayner’s political career and the Labour Party’s reputation as they navigate the turbulent waters of public scrutiny and internal accountability.
